Description

171.01 This work consists of washing and treating construction equipment to remove seeds, plants, and plant fragments from the equipment before the equipment is used on National Forest System lands.

Material

171.02 Conform to the following Subsection:

Water 725.01

Construction Requirements

171.03 General . Notify the CO in writing at least 5 days before moving any construction equipment onto National Forest System lands. Construction equipment does not include cars, pickup trucks, and other vehicles that regularly travel between the construction site and areas outside of National Forest System lands.

Perform all work at a location designated on the plans or other locations approved in writing. Provide the CO with an opportunity to monitor the washing and inspection.

171.04 Equipment. Use a high pressure washing system.

For work on National Forest System lands, use a washing system that traps all wash water and either stores it for removal from National Forest System lands or recycles the water for continued use. If the equipment recycles the water, provide adequate filters for seed removal. Dispose of the filter material and removed seeds in an approved manner. Do not mix soaps, detergents, or other chemicals with the wash water.

For work at a commercial washing facility, use an approved facility.

171.05 Washing. Wash the sides, tops, and undercarriages of all construction equipment.

Remove all seeds, plants, plant fragments, dirt, and debris from the construction equipment.

171.06 Inspection. Inspect the washed construction equipment, including the undercarriage, to ensure that the washing removed the dirt, debris, and seeds from the construction equipment. Rewash the construction equipment as necessary or as directed.

171.07 Acceptance. Weed prevention will be evaluated under Subsection 106.02.

Measurement

171.08 Do not measure weed prevention for payment.

Payment

171.09 Include all costs associated with the Section 171-Weed Prevention as incidental to all other Pay Items.

201.04 Clearing. (c)

Delete paragraph (c) and replace with the following:

(c) In areas outside the excavation, embankment, and slope rounding limits, cut stumps to within 12 inches or one-third of the stump diameter of the ground, whichever is higher, measured on the side adjacent to the highest ground.

201.04 Clearing.

Delete subsection (d) and replace with the following:

(d) Do not cut vegetation less than 3 feet tall and less than 3 inches in diameter, that is within the clearing limits but beyond the roadway and not in a decking area, and that does not interfere with sight distance along the road.

Add the following:

(e) Trim branches of remaining trees or shrubs to give a clear height of 14 feet above the roadbed unless otherwise indicated. Trim tree limbs as near flush with the trunk as practicable.

204 – Excavation and Embankment

204.11 Compaction

Delete and Add the following:

(a) Compact by operating construction equipment on full width of surface in 6” lifts until visual displacement ceases. Moisture may be needed if determined by visual inspection.

(b) Compact the aggregate by operating compaction equipment over the total width until visible deformation ceases. A minimum of three complete roller passes shall be made at a moisture content suitable for compaction.

Section 253. - Gabions and Revet Mattresses

253.01 Add the following:

This work also includes the installation of articulated concrete block revetment mat.

Cellular Concrete Block 725.10 Revetment Cable 709.02 Geotextile type IV 714.01

253.03 General. Delete the first sentence and substitute the following:

Survey according to Section 152 and verify the limits of the structure.

253.05 Structure Erection. Add the following to the first paragraph:

For gabion structures, grade the foundation for a width equal to the width of the gabion plus 2 feet. Where gabions are set on rocky foundations, place 6 inches of select granular backfill under the baskets.

253.08 Revet Mattresses. Add the following:

(a) Design Prefabricate articulated concrete block revetment mat as an assembly of concrete blocks, with specific hydraulic capacities, laced with revetment cables. Articulated concrete block revetment mat may be assembled on-site. The concrete cells or blocks may be open or closed as described and may vary in dimension. The blocks will be square and should not be less than 8” or more than 16” in dimension. The open cell units have two (2) vertical openings of rectangular cross section with sufficient wall thickness to resist breakage during shipping and installation. Secure all blocks in any given mat with a minimum of two (2) cables each.

Incorporate interlocking surfaces of each block that minimize lateral displacement of the blocks within the mats when lifted by the longitudinal revetment cables.

Interlocking surfaces must not protrude beyond the perimeter of the blocks to such an extent that they reduce the flexibility or articulation capability of the cellular mats or become damaged or broken when the mats are lifted during shipment or placement. Once in place the interlocking surfaces of the mats shall minimize the lateral displacement of the blocks even if the cables should become damaged or removed. A minimum of 18° between any given row or column of blocks in the uplift direction and a minimum of 45° in the downward direction must be maintained in the mats. Insert cables into the mats allowing for lifting loops at one end of the mat with the corresponding cable ends spliced together to form a lifting loop at the other end of the mat. Insert cables after sufficient time has been allowed for the concrete to complete the curing process. Place the articulated concrete block revetment mat on the filter fabric.

(b) Physical Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(c) Grading

Grade the slope to a smooth plane surface to achieve good contact between the slope face and the geotextile, and between the geotextile and the entire bottom surface of the articulated concrete blocks. Remove or re-grade slope from all deformities, roots, grade stakes, and stones which project normal to the local slope face. Place compacted homogenous material to fill all holes, “pockmarks”, slope board teeth marks, footprints, or other voids greater than 1.0 inch in depth normal to the local slope face. Place compacted homogenous material to fill all grooves or depressions greater than 0.5 inches in depth normal to the local slope face with a dimension exceeding 1.0 foot in any direction. Uniformly compact the slope and slope face as directed by COR. Excavate and prepare anchor trenches, flanking trenches, and toe trenches or aprons according to the plans. Uniformly grade the anchor trench hinge-point at the top of the slope to prevent dips or bumps greater than 0.5 inches over or under the local grade. Uniformly grade the anchor trench hinge-point to the width that allows good contact between the articulated concrete blocks and the underlying grade at the hinge point. Obtain approval of the subgrade from the COR prior to placement of filter fabric and articulated concrete blocks.

Water Absorption Mx. Lb/ft3

Avg. of 3 units Individual Unit Avg. of 3 units Individual Unit

4,000 3,500 9.1 11.7

(d) Placement

Place the articulated concrete blocks on top on the subgrade. No individual block within the plane of placed articulated concrete blocks shall protrude more than one inch or as otherwise specified by the COR. If placed as a large mattress, use a spreader bar or other approved device to lift and place the mats in the proper position with a crane or other approved equipment. Place mats side-by-side and/or end-to-end so that they abut one another. The mats shall be laid from the downstream end of project to the upstream end, so the geotextile joints are shingled to direct flow over the joint and to prevent undermining. Intimate contact with the subsurface is critical to the systems performance in the field. The gaps between each mat shall not be greater than 2 inches. The upstream two (2) rows of each mat system shall be entrenched and buried at a 45° downward direction into the ground. Type 2 riprap shall be used to fill the entrenched edge. Backfill the trench flush with the top of the blocks.

253.09 Acceptance. Delete the second paragraph and add the following:

Material for gabion structures and revet mattresses will be evaluated under Subsections 106.02,106.03, and the following:

(a) All units shall be sound and free of defects that would interfere with either the proper placement of the unit or impair the performance of the system. Surface cracks incidental to the usual methods of manufacture, or surface chipping resulting from customary methods of handling in shipment and delivery, shall not be deemed ground for rejection. Cracks exceeding 0.25 inches in width and/or 1.0 inch in depth shall be deemed grounds for rejection. Chipping resulting in a weight loss exceeding 10% of the average weight of a concrete unit shall be deemed grounds for rejection.
