BENT CREEK

EXTRACTING TREE CORE SAMPLES

Q1:Is there an estimated or expected award notification date by which contractors may determine the 120 day delivery period? If not, is there a general time frame for award notification for example, "no later than..."?
A1:After award the COR and the contractor will have a pre-work meeting to discuss the project, at that time the Notice to proceed will be issued. The 120 days starts on the date the Notice to proceed is given out.
Q2:What is the range of distance from roads / parking to plots and/or is there an index of these distances from parking locations? Do any plots require off trail or bush-whacking more than 1/2 to 1 mile?
A2:In general, plots are located within an easy walking distance of a road (1/2 mile or so). There are some isolated plots in which a 2 mile hike in is required.
Q3:Is there a lat-long file that can be reviewed to further pinpoint exact plot locations in order to estimate plots per day within general city / quad geographic groups?
A3:We can not provide details regarding the specific location of these plots to a contractor until the contract is awarded.
Q4:Will trees be re-measured during field work with DBH tape (radius or circumference) or simply cored without further measure? Are any other parameters measured as well?
A4:No remeasurements will be required. The trees will just be cored.
Q5.How many USFS / contractor meetings are required or suggested - i.e. - introductory / in-process or updates / training verification and coordination / conclusion - follow up, etc.
A5:As many as needed but generally a prework and a final inspection meeting.

Q6: Are interim or reports based on fieldwork expected and if so, how many?

A6: No official reports will be required. A weekly update via email or phone relaying progress will be expected.

Q7:Does USFS provide the larger field storage tube in which cores will be safely stored during / between plots (this is not listed under tools).
A7:The Contractor will provide any tools or equipment not listed in Amendment 2.
Q8:What is the brand and quality of increment borers? Are they new, used, and/or still under warranty? Will the contractor be held responsible for bore-tips which break off or lodge into trees which cannot be removed (which can happen with cheap bits). Will USFS replace broken bits that are not contractors fault? How many bits are supplied (ie - are additional bits supplied in the event bits break or are useless?)
A7:The FS will provide 4 Hagolf increment borers. In addition, the FS will provide a bore sharpening kit. These increment borers are high-quality and therefore should not have the issues that a cheaper bit can have (e.g., breaking off in the tree). Damage to increment borers that are not the contractors fault will be replaced. However, lost borers, borers broke or unusable due to improper storage, usage, etc. must be replaced by the contractor. Contractor will be responsible for sharpening dull bits.

BENT CREEK

EXTRACTING TREE CORE SAMPLES

Q9:Are cores to be sanded and counted or simply provided to USFS while taped?
A9:No, the cores do not have to be sanded or counted.
Q10.Is there any data entry or record keeping required which will be notable in terms of estimating time?
A10:No.
Q11.How clearly are plots and trees marked and what are they marked with? Is the marking consistent?
A11:The plots are clearly marked. They are 1/4 acre in size and green paint is on each tree in the plot at

dbh. Individual trees are marked with a brass tag at the base of the tree.

Q12.Are photos required for plots and if so, what is the methodology?
A12:No, photos are not required.

Q13. What is the backup tree coring protocol for fallen trees or plots which have been destroyed by natural disturbance?

A14: A list of between 8 and 10 trees will be provided. The first 5 listed will be the preferred trees to core. However, if one of the first 5 trees is dead or if the contractor is unable to hit the pith of a tree, another tree from the provided list should be selected.

AS A RESULT OF THE QUOTATION DEADLINE BEING SEPTEMBER 10 THIS WILL BE THE LAST AMENDMENT. NO MORE QUESTIONS CAN BE ANSWERED ON THIS SOLICITATION.
