EXTRACTING TREE CORE SAMPLES

Q1: What are the tree species that are to be increment cored?

A1: Only yellow poplar will be cored

Q2: Explain the drying process and mounting of the individual cores A2: Cores will be stored in paper straws. To dry, the paper straws containing the straws should be set in a climate controlled building and laid out in a single layer for 5 – 7 days. The cores will then be glued and wrapped with scotch tape into prepared wooden core mounts with the mounts properly labeled with plot and tree information (information provided to Contractor prior to coring). It is essential that cores are properly placed in the mounts. Explanation of this process will be done prior to the contractor coring the plots.

Q3: What is the diameter of the increment borers A3: We will provide 20" and 24" borers

Q4: What is the diameter of the trees that will be bored?

A4: The range of diameters will be around 25-35" dbh.

Q5: Please provide information about plot locations in each state and plot sizes.

A5: There are 90 plots in North Carolina, 17 plots in northern GA, and 31 plots in Virginia. The plot size is ¼ acre each.

Please see attached plot information chart for further information.

Q6: How far apart are the plots located?

A6: When plots are clustered, they are within 150 yards or so of each other. Most plots are within a short walk of well-mainted roads. A few plots require a 2 mile hike or so in, but this is the exception, not the rule. Attached plot information chart will provide further information.

Q7: What is the significance of being within a days drive of Asheville, NC?

A7: The daily driving distance requirement is so that the technical expert can easily meet the Contractor to discuss issues, perform quality control checks while in the field. Also, as a result of budget restraints there is limited funding for travel expenses. (i.e., locations in surrounding states of NC is ok, however paying for expenses of a contractor on the west coast, would be excessive and not cost effective)

Q8: Is sub-contracting allowed on this contract?

A8: Subcontracting is allowed as long as the sub has the expertise and experience, to perform the work. The prime contractor is responsible for re-performing the work, at no cost to the Government, if it is not acceptable. The subcontractor is responsible for following the same regulations and requirements in the awarded contract that the prime contractor is, including the wage determination in Attachment 1, and the completion date established in the contract. The subcontractor’s contract/agreement is with the prime contractor and as such all questions regarding the contract are to be directed to the prime contract, not the Government.
