REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER SYSTEM
(USDA PURCHASE)
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Duplex reverse osmosis (RO) generators.
2. Carbon filter.
3. Antiscalant injection and duplex pumps.
4. Simplex water softener and brine storage tank.
5. Calcite filter.
6. RO storage tank.
7. Duplex pumps (BP-1 and BP-2).
8. Control panel and associated controls.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit manufacturer's performance data for the reverse osmosis skid which will meet the design conditions. Provide rated capacities, literature indicating general assembly components, controls, safety controls, wiring diagrams with electrical characteristics, connection requirements, service connections, layout requirements, and service and access clearances.
B. Indicate assembly dimensions, structural mounting requirements, shipping and operating weights, basin configuration, electrical characteristics, and connection requirements. Drawings shall be certified for construction.
C. Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate rigging, installation, and start-up procedures.
D. Operation and Maintenance Data: Include manufacturer's descriptive literature, operating instructions, cleaning procedures, replacement parts list, and maintenance and repair data. Provide recommended spare parts list for facility with 24-7 operation schedule.
E. Warranty: Submit manufacturer warranty and ensure forms have been completed in Owner's name and registered with manufacturer.
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer shall have been engaged in the manufacture of reverse osmosis systems as a major product line for a period of not less than ten years.
B. Manufacturer shall provide a performance guarantee that states that in the event actual field testing confirms the installed unit to be short of submitted capacity, the manufacturer will provide the required alterations to the equipment to attain submitted capacity at no additional cost to the owner or contractor.
Any such alterations shall be accomplished in an expeditious manner. Expeditious shall be defined as within one week of notification the manufacturer will provide a repair or alteration plan, and the repair or alteration work will be executed within the following week
1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Protect units before, during, and after shipping (and prior to installation) from damage to skid by leaving factory shipping packaging in place until immediately prior to final acceptance.
B. Units shall be enclosed as best as practical with a vapor corrosion inhibiting barrier prior to shipping.
1.5 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer shall provide one year parts and labor warranty.
B. Warranty shall commence after the unit has been installed and commissioned as witnessed by the manufacturer and owner representatives.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS
A. Acceptable manufacturers are Evoqua Water Technologies, LLC, or equal.
2.2 SKID MOUNTED EQUIPMENT
A. RO system components shall be factory assembled and tested and provided on a frame constructed of structural carbon steel. Frame shall be sandblasted and epoxy coated.
B. Skid shall be provided with all interconnecting piping connections, wiring, and controls pre-piped. Skid shall have single point connection for electrical, controls, and minimal connections/field piping required for water and drain connections.
C. Skid shall be designed to minimize footprint. Height may be as required to achieve minimal footprint.
D. The following equipment shall be mounted on the skid. All other equipment shall be shipped loose for field installation and field wiring and piping.

4. RO generators
5. Control panel
2.3 DUPLEX REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) GENERATORS
A. Preassembled vertical centrifugal pump, starter, piping, water membrane filter and microprocessor controller.
B. Motor starter and controller shall be housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure. Unit shall be single point power connection.
C. Pump: refer to duplex pump specification (BP-1 and BP-2). Pumps do not have integral VFDs.
D. Membranes:
1. Manufacturer: Hydranautics
2. Model: ESSPA4-4040
3. Materials: Polyamide, thin film composite.
4. Type: Spiral wound
E. Pressure vessels:
1. Materials: FRP shell, polypropylene end cap.
2. Rating: 300 PSIG
F. Membrane shall operate normally in the “tank feed mode” and pump shall accept a start/stop contact from the main control panel based on tank level.
2.4 CARBON FILTER
A. Simplex filter assembly sized for the flow rate shown in the RO System Schedule. Provide “Plus” trim package.
B. Tank shall be FRP designed for 150 psig with an internal backwash distributor and filtered water collector.
C. Filter media shall be 12x40 mesh bituminous coal based activated carbon. Media shall be provided for installation at jobsite during owner training.
D. Backwash Cycle Valve shall be top mounted piston-operated control valve with pre-sized drain line control orifice. Cycle shall be time-clock controlled.
E. Provide (normally closed) bypass valve around filters.
2.5 ANTISCALANT INJECTION AND DUPLEX PUMPS
A. As shown in the RO System Schedule.
2.6 SIMPLEX WATER SOFTENER
A. Softener shall be vertical pressure vessel type with softening resin, control valve, one brine maker and valve controller. Provide “plus” trim package.
B. Vessel to be manufactured from polyethylene reinforced glass filament overwrap.
C. Vessel shall be rated for 150 psig maximum working pressure at a maximum temperature of 120 F, and shall conform to the latest edition of ASME VIII and shall be stamped and certified as such.
D. Vessel shall include an access opening at top, threaded or flanged.
E. The operating valve shall be top mounted and constructed of brass. The valve shall be motor driven piston style and designed with size positions to accomplish the regenerative steps of: backwash, brinerinse, fast rinse, brine refill, stand-by, and service.
F. The main operating valve shall be fitted with a fixed orifice eductor.
G. The main operating valve shall incorporate self-adjusting flow regulators to control the rate of flow for brine refill and backwash to prevent resin loss during backwash cycles regardless of pressure fluctuations between 30 – 100 psig.
H. Provide (normally closed) bypass valve around filters.
I. Provide spare salt sufficient for one complete replacement.
J. Provide brine storage tank.
2.7 CALCITE FILTER
A. Used to raise pH to 7.0 to 7.4, construction similar to carbon filter. Refer to RO System Schedule.
2.8 RO STORAGE TANK
A. Acceptable manufacturer is Chem-tainer vertical polyethylene storage tank, or equal.
B. Size and capacity shall be as shown in the RO System Schedule.
C. Provide openings in the tank at the locations below:
1. Two 1-inch openings at the top for RO feed.
2. 1-inch vent filter at the top.
3. 1.5-inch overflow in the sidewall near the top of the tank.
4. 2-inch outlet in the sidewall near the bottom of the tank.
5. 0.5-inch tap in the sidewall near the bottom of the tank for level sensor.
6. Three 0.5-inch taps in the sidewall for level switches.
2.9 DUPLEX PUMPS
A. Pumps shall be high efficiency centrifugal type with 304 stainless steel casing, shaft impellers.
B. Pump Hydraulic Selection: Pump selection shall be non-overloading over the entire performance curve.
C. Motor Enclosure Rating: TEFC
D. Motor Service Factor: 1.15
E. Motor Efficiency: Premium efficiency
F. Motor Wiring Insulation Class: “H”; motors;
G. Motor Rating: Rated for inverter duty, with insulated motor bearings;
H. Provide Aegis shaft ground rings on all motors.
I. Provide integral VFD.
2.10 CONTROL PANEL AND ASSOCIATED CONTROLS
A. UL Listed NEMA 4 enclosure.
B. Provide controller to alternate RO generators and provide low level protection for BP-1 and BP-2.
C. All wiring factory installed and tested.
D. Single point connection for power to skid.
E. Provide the following devices shipped loose for field installation:
1. Tank level sensor
2. Three level switches for installation in RO tank.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Install all components in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
B. Provide piping connections and accessories as indicated in drawings and P&IDs.
C. Provide overflow, bleed and drain as indicated.
D. Provide for connection to electrical service. Refer to electrical drawings.
3.2 SYSTEM STARTUP
A. Flush and disinfect new water lines and RO system and tank interiors in accordance with AWWA C651
B. Mechanical Contractor shall provide check out and start up in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements.
3.3 MEASUREMENT AND VERIFICATION
A. Test capacity and RO water quality. Testing shall be done in the presence of the owner.
B. Prepare and submit a written startup report to Mechanical Engineer after completion of start-up
3.4 TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
A. Provide a manufacturer's field representative who is a qualified representative capable of performing startup and testing, and knowledgeable in all aspects of the RO system operation.
B. Provide a minimum of 4 hours time on-site for pre-startup inspection. Time shall be exclusive of travel time. Contractor shall schedule with manufacturer rep prior to system startup to inspect the installation for conformance with installation requirements.
C. Provide a minimum of 8 hours for startup and commissioning of RO skid. Time shall be exclusive of travel time.
D. Provide a minimum of 8 hours time on-site for training. Time shall be exclusive of travel time. Train operating personnel in operation and maintenance of units, and in basic troubleshooting and servicing of all skid components. Training shall include an overview of material within the operation and maintenance manuals, and shall include a minimum of 6 copies of such material for training plant personnel. Training shall include an overview of service intervals required for each component on the skid.
E. Schedule training with the owner through the Mechanical Engineer.
F. Manufacturer shall provide the following closeout documentation:
1. A single copy of the RO skid specific Operation and Maintenance Manual in an electronic format.
2. A single copy of the RO Skid specific Operation and Maintenance Manual in a hard bound format.
3. A single laminated 24x30 or larger diagram of the RO skid indicating controls and flow.

Any and all products submitted for evaluation will be evaluated as meeting at least the minimal specifications required.
Funding is not currently available for this purchase but is anticipated to be fully funded prior to contract award.
