Information Pertinent to Preparing Offers AG-0489-S-10-0340 – RECOVERY – Umatilla Deferred Road Maintenance.

Prepared April 8, 2010

General information:

· Estimated snow depth in project area as of this date is approximately 7 feet on the main access roads, Road 63 & Road 62.

· Road 62: FS performs annual maintenance (blading, drainage, logout); commercial users also annually perform maintenance commensurate with their use. Subgrade width averages 18 feet.

· Roads 6214 and 6217 are designated high clearance access and due to trailheads attract a measure of public use. FS performs maintenance focusing on Safety and not necessarily annually. Subgrade widths average 16 – 18 ft.

· Road 6219, 6200270 and 6200271 also are designated high clearance access but are closed to public use by gates. FS performs maintenance focusing on Safety and not necessarily annually. FS administrative use has occurred over the past few years with limited log out for this access. Subgrade widths average 16 – 18 ft.

Pay Item 20420 – Drainage excavation, type – Drain Dip

Work under this pay item includes excavating, shaping, and preparing drain dips for the subsequent placement of aggregate, and disposing of unsuitable materials. Excavated materials that are unsuitable for incorporation with aggregate shall be spread on adjacent fill slopes away from drainages, or otherwise disposed of in locations designated by the CO.

Note: on most roads COR anticipates close to 100% haul of excavated material.

Note differences (see drawings) between drain dips installed on grades steeper than, or flatter than 5%. Dips on steeper grades require more excavation and length to provide a smoother transition through the dip. Each dip is unique, due to variations in topography.

Pay Item 25104 – Keyed riprap, class – 3

Riprap for each drain dip’s spill apron shall be keyed into the slope below the outlet of the drain dip. The intent is to establish a firm foundation for the riprap to be placed upon, so it will remain stable as water flows from the drain dip. No dimensions are shown, as the outflow areas and slopes for each drain dip are unique. Dimensions of aprons on small fill slopes shall generally be greater in the horizontal dimension than the vertical dimension, while aprons on more substantial fill slopes will likely take advantage of the maximum reach of the excavator, resulting in a narrower apron that extends further down the slope.
