Questions and Answers
Dated: 05/18/2015
Question: Copper Naphthenate in Light Oil (Type C). We are the only Type C preservative treatment facility of this product on the west coast. Our retorts are limited to materials 50ft or shorter. Options for treating the stringers are limited to Pentachlorophenol Type A. There is one plant that treats longer than 50' Copper Naphthenate Type A, but they are dedicated to utility poles. So bridge stringers over 50' are limited to Pentachlorophenol type A.
Answer: The Forest Service has a policy restricting the use of Penta to treat wood installed over “fish streams”. Since Cascade Creek is a “fish stream”, Penta cannot be used leaving Copper Napthenate as the other suitable treatment for the wood species specified.
