Current and Historic Photos
Plum Island Life-Saving Station Window Restoration
Photo 1. North elevation of the Life-Saving Station crew quarters, August 2020.
Photo 2. East elevation, 2020.
Photo 3. South elevation, 2020.
Photo 4. West elevation, 2020.
Historic view 1. North elevation, 1939. In this view, the small original 6-light casements remained in place in the tower walls, the original 4/4 double-hung windows remain in place in the dormers, and the two original 6/6 double-hung windows remain in place at the base of the tower. The casement and dormer windows will be included in the Base Bid. The windows at the base of the tower are included in Bid Alternate 1. The shingled half wall, storm windows/frames, and double porch doors would be reconstructed as part of Bid Alternate 3.
Historic view 2. South and east elevations, 1939. Main level openings on the east elevation originally contained a 9-light fixed window (left), a 12/2 double-hung window (center), and an 18-light fixed window (right). Compare this view to Photo 2 above. The original openings have been restored, and new replica window units will be fabricated and installed as part of the Base Bid.
Historic view 3. South elevation, 1939. New 4/4 replica sash will be fabricated for the dormers as part of the Base Bid, and new replica 6/6 sash would be fabricated for the bathroom window (highlighted) as part of Bid Alternate 1. Deteriorated window framing, flooring, and other elements of the back porch would be restored, and a new storm door and windows will be fabricated as part of Bid Alternate 4.
Historic views 5-6. The Plum LSS in 1916. There were originally two 9/2 double-hung windows looking out over the front porch. These windows remained in place until 1964, when they were replaced with a single picture window. The detail drawing at right is taken from George Tolman’s standard plan for the Duluth-Style stations, and shows the original configuration. The original rough openings have been restored, and two complete new replica window units would be fabricated as part of Bid Alternate 1.
Historic view 7. Detail of the original 9/2 north windows.
