About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q and A) file for a NASA pressure vessel procurement solicitation. The key technical specifications include a carbon steel pressure vessel with a maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of 300 psi, designed for a working temperature range of 60°F to 120°F. The vessel will be 16" OD with a vertical orientation, requiring typical industrial painting, and constructed per ASME B&PVC Section VIII Div. 1 standards. Additional details confirm the vessel will use 2:1 elliptical heads, have a custom 16" flange, and will only be pressure cyclically loaded with no vacuum rating requirement. The solicitation requires vendors to include their SAM entity information (cage code or entity number) when submitting a quote for this NASA Shared Services Center procurement.

Q and A:
What is the requested Design Pressure?
MAWP ( max allowable working pressure) is 300 psi
What is the requested Design Temperature Range?
Working temperature range is 60 deg F to 120 deg F
Is there a preferred material of construction?
Carbon steel
If carbon, is paint requested?
yes
Vessel Size: 16" OD by how long?
Vessel MAWP in PSIG:300 psi
Corrosion Allowance if any: .0625" is pretty typical.
If allowed under ASME B&PVC Section VIII Div. 1 and be “U” stamped then yes
Schedule of openings: list of size, QTY and type of connection
See drwaing
Internals: Are they any type internals? If so, what?
NO unless required by ASME B&PVC Section VIII Div. 1
Orientation: Vertical or Horizontal
See drawing: vertical
Materials of construction: Carbon Steel (SA36, SA51670, SA106B), Stainless (304 or 316), something else?
Carbon steel per ASME B&PVC Section VIII Div. 1
What type of material is needed for the heads and shells? It’s not on the drawings.
Will carbon steel suffice or do you need SS?
What is the required material of construction for the pressure vessel? Should we plan for carbon steel, or is another material specified?
• Design temperature to pair with the 300 PSI MAWP.
o Working temperature range is 60 deg F to 120 deg F
• Clarification on the 16" flange (custom per drawing vs. standard 400#) o 16” flange is custom per drawing
• Whether painting is required. yes
• Confirmation that 2:1 elliptical heads are acceptable.
o 2:1 is acceptable given that the overall height is per the drawing
1. I see max pressure, though no note of max temperature – please confirm.
a. 60 deg F to 120 deg F
2. Will this be cyclical loaded (temp or pressure)?
a. Pressure cyclical loaded only
3. Should this be designed for any vacuum rating?
a. No vacuum rating
4. Should this be designed for lethal service?
a. Not sure/ NO
5. Typically ASME requires an inspection port, design will likely need modified to include.
a. That is acceptable
6. What’s the material?
a. If carbon steel, is it painted? If so what paint system?
1. Carbon steel, typical industrial paint
7. Any finishing requirements on ID/OD? Ground smooth? Mill finish?
a. No requirements
