About this file
This is a Material Ordering Data document for MIL-DTL-1222, a federal specification governing the procurement of fasteners for high-reliability applications. The document specifies requirements for self-locking hex socket head cap screws manufactured from nickel-aluminum (NICUAL) material in Grade 500, Type II configuration. The fasteners are sized at 2.250 inches diameter with thread series 4.5UNC-3A and a length of 5.500 inches, designed to meet ANSI-B18.3 standards for socket head cap screw geometry.
The fasteners are intended for general, high-temperature, high-strength, and corrosive environment applications requiring elevated reliability, including immersion in seawater, salt air/marine environments, high preloads, and high shock loadings. The specification references MIL-DTL-1222J (dated 08 DEC 2020) as the governing general specification and mandates compliance with NSTM S9086-CJ-STM010 Chapter 75 Revision 5 for K-monel socket head capscrews. Self-locking elements must comply with MIL-DTL-18240. Required testing and reporting include chemical analysis and mechanical property test results; identification markings per NSTM standards shall read "A574" or "STM." Cut or ground threads are permitted. The document was prepared by Wayne Booher under code C/127.2 and includes ordering data identifiers IDN: 4523A 6134-8327, ICN: 38JCD59603, KO: R40, and KOI: 004.

6.1 Intended use. Fasteners meeting this specification are intended for general, high temperature, high strength and corrosive environment applications where a high degree of reliability is required.
It is designed to be used to acquire commercial off-the-shelf fasteners with added inspections to verify the high degree of reliability required. Fastener types and grades have been selected to meet diverse applications which include: elevated temperatures, immersion in sea water, salt air/marine environments, high preloads and high shock loadings.
