About this file

This document is a detailed technical specification for magnetized NdFeB bars required for the Argonne National Laboratory's ECR2 ion source. The specification covers the magnetic and mechanical properties of the bars, including requirements for the NdFeB material, magnetization direction, thermal stabilization, block assembly, bonding, and surface coatings. Key requirements include a minimum remnant flux density of 1.39T, coercivity of 1631 kA/m, maximum energy product of 393 kJ/m3, and tight tolerances on magnetization direction and dipole moment. The vendor must provide test data on the magnetic properties of each individual block and assembled bars. The specification also covers the fabrication of stainless-steel protective sleeves for the bars, including welding, leak testing, and dimensional verification.

This specification is associated with a Department of Energy Office of Science solicitation for the procurement of the magnetized NdFeB bars. The solicitation will be awarded on a lowest price, technically acceptable basis.

ECR2 2024 Sextupole Specification

1. Scope

a. Specification covers magnetized NdFeB bars which will provide the sextupole magnetic field for the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) ECR2 ion source.

b. Three “North” bars, as shown in ANL drawing G14825-B14, will be assembled by the vendor from the individual blocks shown in ANL drawings G14825-B15 and G14825-B16.

c. Three “South” bars, as shown in ANL drawing G14825-B17, will be assembled by the vendor from the individual blocks shown in ANL drawings G14825-B18 and G14825-B19.

2. Magnetic properties

a. NdFeB bars will be constructed from Vacuumschmelze VACODYM 745 DHR material. Diffusion treatment on all surfaces of the individual side and middle blocks.

i. Br (minimum)1.39 T
ii. HcJ1631 kA/m
iii. BHmax393 kJ/m3

b. Vendor will furnish representative magnetization curve of the material utilized.

c. The direction of magnetization of each block must be within ± 2° of values specified in ANL drawings G14825-B20, G14825-B21, G14825-B22, G14825-B23.

d. Magnetized blocks will be thermally stabilized at 50°C for 3 hours in an open circuit condition. Each stabilized block will exhibit a loss equal to or less than 1% of its original magnetic moment.

e. Dipole moment of each block will be within ± 2% of the average value obtained for all blocks.

3. Mechanical properties

a. The number of blocks used for each bar will be at vendor’s discretion. Final assembly information will be furnished to ANL.

b. Bar surfaces will conform to dimensions and tolerances as specified in ANL drawings.

4. Bonding and coating information

a. Bonding agents used to bond blocks together must achieve the highest strength possible and be stable over a temperature range of 10 to 50°C in air. Vendor will furnish information and drawings that describe bond strengths, materials, and dimensions.

b. Vendor will quote, as an option, a coating of VACCOAT 10047 to encapsulate each NdFeB bar as protection from atmospheric corrosion. Final dimensions of bars must account for this coating.

5. Test data

a. Vendor will measure the magnetic dipole moment of each block to a precision of ± 1% or better. Vendor will supply specifications of the measuring system.

b. Test data from 5.a. will be supplied in tabular form.

c. Vendor will measure the magnetic pole field strength of each bar 1 cm from the pole surface. Measurement is along the length of each bar - the North head for the North bars and the South tail for the South bars. Vendor will supply specifications of the measuring system.

d. Test data from 5.c. will be supplied for each bar.

6. Protective can

a. Stainless-steel sleeves will be constructed and assembled per ANL drawings G14825-B9, G14825-B10, G14825-B11, G14825-B12.

b. After magnet insertion, welding of part G14825-B11 onto sleeve must account for presence of strong magnetic field and temperature sensitivity of NdFeB magnets.

c. After magnet insertion and final welding, each sleeve assembly will be helium leak checked with leak rate not to exceed 1.0E-7 torr l/s.

d. After welding and leak checking, the final dimensions of each bar will be confirmed by passing them through an aluminum channel (which simulates the plasma chamber channels on drawing G14825-B5), which will be provided by ANL.

e. After welding, the magnetic pole field strength will be measured as per 5.c.
