GSA

Point Naming Convention for Building Management Systems

The intent of this section is to establish and require a consistent means of naming building automation points across the

GSA

portfolio.

The term ‘Point’ is a generic description for the class of object represented by analog and binary inputs, outputs, and values either physical or virtual.

The Contractor shall configure the systems with the perspective of the GSA’s overall portfolio and not just for one project in particular.

The value of using an alphanumeric point-‐naming standard is to provide a unique, logical and concise description of the purpose and function of the point being described.

All systems shall use this naming convention and process.

Any deviations from this process require prior approval of the

GSA

and/or their representative1.

Point naming shall be consistent through system drawings, records, files and documents.

A Point Summary Table shall be created and kept current throughout the duration of the

Project, by the Contractor, as the Master List of all points for the Project.

Project closeout documents shall include an up-‐to-‐date accurate Point Summary Table.

The Contractor shall submit the final Point Summary Table for approval, prior to final acceptance of the system, for each individual project.

The Point Summary Table shall be used as a reference and guide during the Commissioning process.

Point naming and Identification:

The following shall be used as a basis of design.

The goal is to apply logic when possible, and keep the design simple and concise, which in turn will minimize the chance of inadvertently introducing needless complexity.

A consistent point naming convention shall be utilized to facilitate familiarity and operational ease across the

GSA

portfolio.

Inter-‐facility consistency shall be maintained to ensure transparent operability to the greatest degree possible.

The tables below detail the object naming convention and general format of the descriptor string.

A maximum of characters shall be used.

Other attributes such as point address, descriptors and other system specific information may be required.

The same level reasoning should be applied when establishing the framework for this as well.

Where not defined by

GSA

Point Naming Standard, contractor shall reference Project Haystack

Point summary table:

The Point Summary Table shall contain all data fields on a single row per point.

The purpose of a Point Summary Table is to have a single master source for all point information in the building that is easily sorted and kept up-‐to-‐date.

The point description shall be an easily understandable English-‐language description of the point.

A sample Point Summary Table is displayed below:
