About this file

This document provides specifications for raceway and boxes for electrical systems for a VA medical center construction project. The specifications cover requirements for various types of conduits, fittings, boxes, and installation details. Conduits must be installed for all wiring as specified. Rigid steel conduit, intermediate metallic conduit, and electrical metallic tubing are allowed for different applications. Fittings must meet NEMA and UL standards. Boxes must comply with UL 50 and 514A. The project involves site preparation and construction of a new 107,550 square foot parking lot including general construction, alterations, demolition, grading, roads, walks, drainage, stormwater, fencing and landscaping. The pre-solicitation notice states that the VA plans to issue an invitation for bid for construction services for the project, with an estimated cost between $2-5 million. The solicitation will be a total SDVOSB set-aside for proposals from qualified and registered SDVOSBs under NAICS 238990.

A. In accordance with NEC, NEMA, UL, as shown on drawings, and as specified herein.

B. Install conduit as follows:

1. In complete mechanically and electrically continuous runs before pulling in cables or wires.

2. Flattened, dented, or deformed conduit is not permitted. Remove and replace the damaged conduits with new conduits.

3. Cut conduits square, ream, remove burrs, and draw up tight.

4. Independently support conduit at 2.4 M (8 feet) on centers with specified materials and as shown on drawings.

5. Do not use suspended ceilings, suspended ceiling supporting members, lighting fixtures, other conduits, cable tray, boxes, piping, or ducts to support conduits and conduit runs.

6. Support within 300 mm (12 inches) of changes of direction, and within 300 mm (12 inches) of each enclosure to which connected.

7. Close ends of empty conduits with plugs or caps at the rough-in stage until wires are pulled in, to prevent entry of debris.

8. Secure conduits to cabinets, junction boxes, pull-boxes, and outlet boxes with bonding type locknuts. For rigid steel and IMC conduit installations, provide a locknut on the inside of the enclosure, made up wrench tight. Do not make conduit connections to junction box covers.

9. Conduit bodies shall only be used for changes in direction and shall not contain splices.

C. Conduit Bends:
