Amendment 2 Questions & Answers
1. Fixtures P-422, P-423, and P-528 are countertop style sinks per the plumbing schedule on PL501. However they are called out to need floor mounted carriers where indicated. Can you please provide a schedule of which sinks need/do not need the carrier as it is not shown on the plumbing drawings?
Answer: As indicated on AI501, AI502, AI503- P-422 and P-423 sinks require a floor-mounted carrier (model indicated on sheets referenced); fixture P-528 will not require a floor mounted carrier.
2. There are three P-704 showers on drawing PL103. Two of them show a floor drain and the other appears to show a shower basin. The schedule on PL501 only has one shower option with the floor drain. Please advise.
Answer: All P-704 showers have a sloped floor (no shower basin).
3. The steam traps specified are listed as carbon steel bodies with flanged connections and no unions allowed. The steam condensate system is specified as threaded piping with unions throughout, typically ¾”-2” line size, and the existing steam traps currently at the VA are cast iron. The steam traps specified are typically used for power plants with high pressure and high temperature steam. Please advise which steam trap is needed.
Answer: We would recommend that ductile or cast iron bodies be allowed with screwed joints and unions in lieu of steel bodies and flanged connections.
4. If the bid deduct is accepted, to what extent should the medical gas piping be installed for patient rooms C356 and C357?
Answe: ½” Oxygen, ½” Medical Air and ¾” Vacuum shall be valved above ceiling and capped in the wall at 7”-0” for future connection to headwalls at the four locations indicated on PL201.
5. Section 232213 – Steam & Condensate Piping – Part 2.2 lists schedule 40 piping for steam and schedule 80 piping for steam condensate. However Part 2.3 lists only schedule 80 pipe and fittings. Typically we see schedule 40 pipe and fittings for steam and schedule 80 pipe and fittings for steam condensate. Please advise if this is acceptable.
Answer: It is acceptable to use Schedule 40 fittings on Schedule 40 pipe and Schedule 80 fittings on Schedule 80 pipe.
6. I would like to get approved as equal on this project for the epoxy flooring. We will meet or exceed all the required specifications, appearance and performance criteria.
We do however have a unique advantage over the other manufacturers. Our DECO PROTECT systems can be installed up to 10lbs CaCl2 moisture test readings. Our system will be price competitive with your current spec but provide the savings on the additional costs required if you readings are higher than the other manufacturer limits (typically 3-4lbs). Please advise what is required.
Answer: Based upon what was provided there was not enough information to make a determination. If the proposed product meets the salient characteristics for the product in the specifications and drawings it would be an acceptable substitute.
7. The following are questions regarding the CFRP reinforcement (carbon fiber):
A. Please provide the total number of new mechanical pipe slab penetrations per “Detail Notes” on detail 1/S-512. If possible, please provide a breakdown of Column Strip, Intersecting Column Strip and Middle Strip penetrations.
Answer: Please refer to Mechanical and Plumbing drawings for slab penetration locations and quantities. As referenced in the question, please see the Detail Notes on Sheet S-512, including “Contractor to assume that 50% of all the new mechanical pipe penetrations will be reinforced with CFRP for bidding purposes.”
Bidders shall include a cost per CFRP Unit Price for penetrations beyond the 50%.
B. Detail 1/S-512 seems to indicate that interrupted top bars shall be replaced with topside CFRP strips and interrupted bottom bars shall be replaced with bottom side CFRP strips. Detail 2/S-512 shows all strips to be placed on the bottom side of the slab. Please clarify the intended locations.
Answer: In 1/S-512 “Detail Notes” bullet 4, the note is intended to place strips on top of slab for cut top bars, and place strips on bottom of slab for cut bottom bars.
C. Sheets S-102 & S-102-2 show rectangular mechanical slab penetrations with either one or two lines depicting CFRP strips. Should the number of lines on the plan be taken literally as the number of strips to be provided at each opening, or is the installer to design the number of strips to be installed at these openings? If the installer is to design the CFRP at these openings, please provide existing structural drawings showing the existing slab reinforcement.
Answer:The number of strips shown on plan is the number of strips required. Strip placement should be near opening perimeter, and not held back as shown at the mechanical opening in the area bounded by grids J, K, 10, 11.
D. Sheet S-101 – Keyed Note #1 – calls for one strip to be installed. Detail 8/S-510 calls for “strips”, but graphically shows only one strip. Please confirm the number of strips for Keyed Note #1.
Answer: Only one strip is required, typical for all beams.
E. Detail 11/S-510 – Please provide existing structural drawings so that beam geometries and a quantity of reinforcing wrap can be determined.
Answer: Existing Structural drawings attached.
F. Detail 11/S-510 – How many layers of reinforcing wrap are to be installed?
Answer: One layer is required.
G. Are finish coatings required on any of the CFRP strips or reinforcing wraps?
Answer: Manufacturer Wrap and Strip specifications are attached. Meet minimum standards established by manufacturer as well as referenced ESR report (icc-es.org) for installation.
H. The Simpson FRP strips being used for reinforcement on existing and new openings, will they require fireproofing?
Answer: Repair should meet the requirements of IBC Type 2A or NFPA Type 2 (222).
8. We respectfully submit for your consideration a request to approve products as an accepted substitute on Relocate Step Down Unit REBID (19-750784); please find substitution request form attached.

Health Product Declaration - Duralife Duralife Specifications Duralife HDPE vs. Metal Comparison Duralife Locker Brochure LEED Points Warranty Answer: The proposed lockers appear to meet our specifications. Supplier should verify that they can provide locker size as identified in the specifications and drawings (they likely can).
9. The drawings show 16 gases per bed (which is a lot of Medical Gas per bed) so we went to the written spec to see the number of Oxygen, Air and Vacuum that is required. The written spec does not specify the quantity needed. What is the quantity needed for the following items:
Number of Oxygen needed Number of Air needed Number of Vacuum needed Number of Emergency duplex needed Number of Normal duplexes needed Number of Data provisions needed Answer: See Appendix E for Patient Bed Service Wall (Headwall) service quantities, types, and configuration.
10. The equipment rail shown on Drawing AI203 does not have a dimension. Please advise on dimension?
Answer: 4’-0” – also see Appendix E.
11. The written spec attached Page 9, Part 2, Letter L, Number 3 Monitor Arm. Please verify who is providing the monitor arm? Monitor arms are normally provided by the monitor vendor.
Answer: Monitor arm will be supplied by the vital signs monitor supplier.
12. Please confirm the quantity of the med gas pods, duplex receptacles, normal receptacles and data provisions in the patient headwalls.
Answer: Similar question and answer to #9 above.
