About this file

This Request for Quote (RFQ) No. 2025026398 from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) seeks a Lab-Based X-Ray Micro-CT System with specific technical requirements. The system must accommodate samples up to 5 inches in diameter and 1 foot in height, handle materials including batteries, ceramics, cements, and ores, and be installed in an area less than 15 ft x 15 ft. Key technical specifications include achieving a tomogram acquisition in under 1 hour, a voxel size of 300 μm, multiple magnification detector settings, and a spatial resolution target of 700 nanometers.

The solicitation uses a Best Value Selection process, with proposals due on 10/2/2025 at 5:00 pm Mountain Time. The RFQ contact is Kirby Hoffman, Subcontract Administrator, located at NREL in Golden, Colorado. Amendment No. 1 extends the proposal deadline and provides clarifications to vendor questions, particularly around imaging resolution, region of interest requirements, and system capabilities. Vendors are expected to demonstrate a system that can flexibly image various materials with high-resolution micro-computed tomography capabilities.

Amendment No. 1 Amendment No. 1 is hereby issued in response to questions received regarding the subject Request for Quote (RFQ) and to extend the RFQ deadline to 10/2/2025. Please note that some questions may have been edited to address duplicate questions or to protect business-sensitive information provided in the original questions. The essences of the original questions are not affected. Questions are in no particular order.

Q. Is this labeled as minimum achievable voxel size, rather than the spatial resolution?

A. Minimum achievable voxel size

Q. If the 300 nm spec is referring to voxel resolution, do you have a requirement for a specification of actual spatial resolution? Current state of the art is around a half micron (or better) for spatial resolution evaluated on an actual reference target image.

A. Yes, the spatial resolution target is 700 nanometers

Q. In reference to "Must have region of interest imaging", do you have a quantitative expectation for this? Do you require a certain spatial resolution for a given size of sample or working distance around the rotation axis?

A. No definite specifics. It is very dependent on sample size and imaging conditions, but an example would be that for a sample of 2 mm diameter, a region of interest of 1 mm diameter with 10 micrometer spatial resolution could be achieved within that sample.

Q. In reference to "multiple magnification settings", do you have a specific requirement for how this is achieved? For example, by adjustment of system geometry, or by selection of different magnification detectors?

A. By selection of different magnification detectors

Q. What are the expectations for this system area?

A. < 15 ft x 15 ft

Q. Size of samples?

A. Must facilitate maximum size of 5 inches diameter and 1 ft height

Q. Material to be used?

A. Range of materials including batteries, ceramics, cements, and ores

Q. Throughput requirements?

A. Must achieve tomogram acquisition in less than 1 hour

Q. Expectation for results, particularly resolution?

A. Must achieve a voxel size of 300 um
