Request for Information RFI TITLE: MAGIS-100 Bakeout Heaters for Various Vacuum Components

Heater Requirements

February 17, 2025 R. Kellett, L. Valerio

This request for information is for heaters to bake the UHV vacuum chambers of the MAGIS- 100 experiment.

We are in the Preliminary Design phase of this project with anticipated procurement of necessary equipment near the end of 2025. During this planning stage, we must understand the ability of vendors to potentially meet the specific requirements for this project, which are described in detail below. First, the supplier will provide a representative sample of the proposed non-magnetic heater materials which must be magnetically tested by Fermilab prior to confirming a prototype order. All prototypes will be evaluated for magnetic properties requested in this document in addition to their ability to heat the device to 150°C. All images and drawings are conceptual at this time; approved drawings will be provided when formal quotes are requested.

The anticipated timeline for this process is:

• Magnetic evaluation (at Fermilab) of proposed sample materials by April 2025.

• Purchase order placed for prototypes by May 2025.

• Prototypes delivered for evaluation by July 2025.

• Complete evaluation of purchased prototypes by August 2025.

• Orders placed for selected components in December 2025.

Some acceptable materials are:

• Annealed Nichrome 80 (preferred) https://www.sisweb.com/ms/wire-nichrome-nickel-chromium.htm

• Annealed C70230*, C70260*, C70330 https://www.copper.org/resources/properties/db/datasheets/wrought-copper-nickels.pdf http://0.0.0.80/

The following seven heater units are needed. Vendors are to specify the heaters they are capable of manufacturing.

1) Heater tape to heat the 6” X 17’ stainless modular section tubes. See Appendix #1. (Quantity 72)

a) The flexible, silicone heater is 40’ long, the heater is ½” wide.

b) The voltage will be 120V, the wattage will be 1040 to 1100 watts max.

c) The heater will need to be flexible enough to wrap around a 6” tube on 4” centers.

d) The heaters, in their entirety, must have low permeability < 1.02 Mµ.

e) Requires non-magnetic, secondary over-temp protection.

2) Heaters for the 6” diameter X 4” long bellows. See Appendix #2. (Quantity 15)

a) Parts with large mass must have low permeability < 1.02 µ. Variances may be allowed subject to

Fermilab testing small parts, such as power leads or connectors.

b) Self-regulating preferred if possible, or requires non-magnetic secondary over-temp protection if conventional heaters are utilized.

c) Power 120V, <8A draw. 150°C Max. Built-in type T thermocouple (two thermocouples needed for over-temp protection, if not self-regulating).

d) The heater shall be pre-formed to fit outside the bellows to prevent kinking of heater tape/blanket.

e) See possible example of heater in appendix # 6 & 7.

3) Heater jackets for modular connection nodes. See Appendix #3. (Quantity 15)

a. Heater must be removable.

b. Can be magnetic.

c. Self-regulating preferred if possible, or secondary over-temp protection required. 120V, 150°C Max.

4) Heaters for the atom source connection nodes. See Appendix #4. (Quantity 4)

a. Heater must be removable.

b. Possible oven box utilizing atom source connection node enclosure, or a heater jacket, or other suggestions compatible with requirements.

c. Can be magnetic.

d. Self-regulating preferred if possible, or secondary over-temp protection required. 120V. 150°C Max.

5) Heater blankets for the irregularly shaped areas, including valves and retroreflection mirror, in the bottom part of the experiment. See Appendix #5.

a. Heater must be removable.

b. Can be magnetic.

c. Self-regulating preferred if possible, or secondary over-temp protection required. 120V.

6) Shorter versions of conventional heaters for 6" tube sections as detailed for heater 1), for the bottom part of the experiment. See Appendix #5.

7) Heater blankets for the pump-out stations. See example of one location in Appendix #5. (Quantity 3)

a. Heater must be removable.

b. Can be magnetic.

c. Self-regulating preferred if possible, or secondary over-temp protection required. 120V. 150°C Max.

Appendix
