About this file

This project manual, prepared by B32 Engineering Group, Inc., details refrigeration system improvements for the Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, New Jersey. The project involves replacing two existing FES GEA Model 195 GME screw compressors with two owner-furnished GEA 195GMXE screw compressors in the facility's two chiller packages. The comprehensive scope of work includes removing and salvaging the existing compressors, installing new compressors, removing and replacing the entire refrigerant oil charge (estimated at 75 gallons per compressor), replacing liquid line refrigerant filter driers, performing pressure and vacuum testing, and conducting laser alignment of each compressor and motor. The project is scheduled for implementation in July 2025, with specific requirements for contractor qualifications, including successful installation of at least two industrial-grade refrigeration systems within the past five years.

The project manual specifies detailed technical requirements, including compliance with various state and national codes such as ASHRAE/ANSI 15 Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration, ASME B31.5 Refrigeration Pressure Piping Code, and relevant state building, electrical, and mechanical codes. The contractor must follow strict guidelines for refrigerant handling, adhering to Section 608 of the Clean Air Act of 1990, and must provide documentation of refrigerant recovery, including technician certifications and equipment verifications. The project also requires the contractor to maintain one chiller package operational at all times during the improvements, with a one-year warranty on materials and labor. The owner will separately handle the removal of existing GEA Mico control panels and installation of new GEA Omni control panels, with a GEA representative providing direct supervision during the compressor installation and startup.
