About this file
This is an educational informational document issued by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection addressing invasive species prevention for the St. George River. The document provides guidance on cleaning procedures and protocols to prevent the spread of didymo, an invasive algae species that threatens flowing water ecosystems. The material outlines a tiered approach to equipment and clothing decontamination, ranging from minimum requirements of thorough scrubbing with soap to optimal procedures involving hot water soaking of susceptible items in a 10% salt or detergent solution for a minimum of three minutes, followed by 48-hour drying periods. The guidance applies to fishing gear, waders, boots, clothing, water shoes, canoes, kayaks, and any equipment that contacts water.
The document emphasizes the critical importance of removing all plant material, mud, and debris from watercraft and personal equipment to prevent the transport of invasive algae cells. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection provides contact information via email at invasives@maine.gov for individuals seeking additional information or resources related to invasive species prevention. This awareness material serves as a public health and environmental protection initiative rather than a procurement opportunity, with no pricing, contract terms, or vendor requirements associated with the document.
