Klondyke Tailings WQARF (State Superfund) Site Remediation, Klondyke, AZ
Project Description: Wood managed the interim removal actions and remediation of a historical lead and zinc mill located in southeastern Arizona.
Surface soils on approximately 31 acres of land surrounding the former mill site were impacted with lead above residential standards. From 2014-2016, interim soil removal actions were completed on an impacted length of dirt road and on six properties that included the former mill site. The scope of work included a Feasibility Study (FS); Proposed Remedial Action Plan (PRAP); preparation of tailings pile cap construction specifications; excavating impacted soils;
consolidating the impacted soils on an existing uncapped tailings pile; collecting confirmation soil samples; and backfilling the excavations with the clean fill. The tailings pile cap construction specifications were used to prepare the construction cost estimate for the tailings pile cap, which was included in the PRAP. A risk assessment prepared in support of the FS, demonstrated that the residual lead concentrations in surface soils outside the footprint of the tailings piles are protective of current property uses. However, remediation is needed to achieve lead concentrations protective of potential future property uses. We presented at three Community Advisory Board meetings. The proposed remedy included capping of two tailings piles and remediation of surface soil impacted with lead above levels protective of potential future uses. The two tailings piles were capped in May 2018. The Construction Completion Report was also prepared.
Fiscal Year 2019-2021 work included the preparation of Engineering Control Plans for the capped tailings piles in support of the Declarations of Environmental Use Restrictions filed on the properties; performance of annual tailings cap inspections and reports; repair of a small erosion channel on an access road to a capped tailings pile, abandonment of four monitoring wells that are no longer required.

ADOT – Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and Removal of CRT Glass, Phoenix, AZ Project Description: Wood was selected for this project, which consisted of a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and the removal of approximately 9,150tons cathode ray tube (CRT) glass on a portion of an ADOT parcel located in Phoenix, Arizona. The CRT glass was disposed of on the parcel by an adjacent CRT glass recycling company.
The CRT glass contained concentrations of lead, which classified the material as hazardous waste.
Historically the site was utilized for agriculture and commercial purposes, including a vehicle storage and pull-apart facility on 10-acres of the site. Imported soil from an unknown origin was also stockpiled on over two acres of the site. Wood performed a soil investigation to assess the potential impacts from current and historic site activities. Over 100 soil sampling grids were placed on the site and discrete soil samples were collected from each grid cell using a hand auger. The samples were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 8260B (AZ List), pesticides using USEPA Method 8081B, herbicides using USEPA Method 8151A, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compounds (PAHs) by USEPA Method 8270-SIM and eight Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, and silver) using USEPA Methods 6010C/7471.
Concentrations of dieldrin in excess of the AZ Residential Soil Remediation Levels (rSRL) were detected in soils imported soil stockpile area. Concentrations of arsenic and chromium above AZ rSRLs were detected in the former vehicle storage area. Approximately 550 tons of impacted soil was removed, transported, and disposed of at the Waste Management Northwest Regional Landfill in Surprise, Arizona.
The project also included the preparation of a Work Plan and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), air permitting, baseline soil sampling to characterize five acres of the site, removal of 9,150tons of CRT glass as either hazardous or non-hazardous waste, confirmation soil sampling, and final reporting.
mailto:johnson.kyle@azdeq.gov
Overall Results: By working with State of Arizona regulators and ADOT Risk Management, Wood developed a unique remediation plan, successfully removed all CRT glass from the site and saved the State of Arizona approximately $2M in remediation costs.

Cave Creek Landfill RCRA Site, Cave Creek, AZ Project Description: Since 2009, our team has assisted Maricopa County with the characterization and remediation of TCE-impacted groundwater underlying the Cave Creek Landfill in accordance with the terms of an ADEQ Consent Order. Our scope of services includes:
• Ongoing groundwater monitoring and plume characterization in the downgradient aquifer with:
o Routine Conceptual Site Model updates o Groundwater modeling and containment analysis to support selection of remedial alternatives for groundwater o Preparation of a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) with associated community involvement activities o Soil vapor intrusion evaluation in the neighborhood adjacent to the project site to assess the human health risk
• Implementation of portions of the RAP to address the source of groundwater impacts including design of a P&T facility that is currently being constructed to remediate the groundwater plume
• Full-scale SVE operations for source control o Removal of over 32,000 pounds of contaminants
• Landfill gas migration evaluation after methane was detected at elevated levels near the landfill boundary
• Installation and sampling of a new multi-completion vapor probe and an appropriately screened SVE well to target the landfill gas issue
• Public/Community outreach and involvement activities Full-scale SVE O&M began in September 2015 and has since removed over 32,000 pounds of contaminants. We have routinely used automated control systems to remotely monitor equipment and are responsible for documenting equipment operations in quarterly reports for regulators and complying with the site air permit through performance testing. Installation of monitoring wells to evaluate both groundwater and soil vapor in deep alluvial sediments has necessitated development of innovative well designs to provide cost effective solutions for contamination delineation. Development of a project database to store available site data and a geographic information system (GIS) model used to visualize site hydrogeology and associated contamination pathways have provided value for this long-term project.
