Meteorological Station – Installation Requirements The sonic anemometers need to be a minimum of 5 meters and preferably 10 meters above major obstructions within 50 meters of the station.
The sensors should be mounted on a folding or telescoping pole/tower to allow easy access for repair, maintenance and calibration change out.
Redundant sensors should be mounted on a cross arm attached to the tower/pole such that the sensors are at least 1.5 meters apart and no more than 2 meters apart. The vertical locations of the redundant sensors should be staggered by 0.5 meters (no more than 1 meter). That is one sonic should be mounted so that it is 0.5 meters higher than the second sonic. This minimizes the wind disturbance of the sensors on each other. A typical installation is shown in figure 1, while this depicts propeller anemometers, the configuration will be the same for the sonic anemometers.
The wind sensors should be mounted on a boom above the top of the tower or project horizontally from the tower side. The boom should not rotate, twist, or sway. The sensors should be mounted on a boom at least two tower widths away from the tower side. The sensors should be mounted on a boom at least one tower width away from the tower top. The boom should project in the true north - south direction.
The construction and mounting/securing of the tower/pole to the building rooftop/infrastructure must be capable of surviving 145 mph winds or building owner requirements whichever is greater. All parts of the installation must meet applicable federal, state, NYC and local codes/requirements as well as meeting building owner requirements.
Data loggers, DC-DC converters and peripheral equipment (modems, power supplies, etc.) will be enclosed in a type 4X, stainless steel, weather proof enclosure that can be locked to inhibit tampering. All through connectors will be weather proof. Sensor cables should include a weather proof quick connect that allows easy change out of the sensors.
All structural material must be corrosion resistant and aluminum is recommended when possible. Steel components must be protected such as by hot galvanizing following ASTM 123. Other protections are acceptable if known to be effective.
Lightning protection is required to protect the sensors and electronics. It is acceptable to use/take credit for lightning protection that may be present if the sensors are mounted on an existing tower.
The data loggers must be connected to the internet so data can be transferred to the remote computers/servers.
Redundant computer systems [expected to be off-site] will be supplied that will be used to collect and archive the data and also serve the data to a webpage. The computers should be compatible with Campbell Scientific Inc.’s RTMC-Pro software, lndb and loggernet; have a minimum of 1 TB data storage capacity and have independent UPS backup power.
