Prospective Contractor Questions and Answers
1. Specification section 35 22 10 Part 2 Products
2.01 6: Operating speed – The specifications call out for 12 inches per minute which is an
AWWA standard, but we found many of the existing gates operating at 5 inches per minute. We usually operate gates in this type of application at the 5 to 6 inches per minute so should we use the existing gate speeds?
A: Refer to revised specifications Section 352210, Slide Gate Actuators and Stems. The following is incorporated into specifications Section 352210, Paragraph 2.01 A.6.
“Operating Speed: Match existing speed plus or minus 10 percent.”
2. Specification section 35 22 10 Part 2 Products
2.01 11: Stem Cover – The specifications call out for galvanized stem covers with slotted holes with clear plastic windows for gate position. The existing stem covers are painted steel schedule 40 pipe without slots. Based on the weather conditions these gates are in and our experience the slotted holes will end up allowing water inside the covers and with the freeze / thaw temperatures you will end up with problems inside the actuator or gearbox.
Can we supply galvanized schedule 40 stem covers or aluminum stem covers? The aluminum stem covers are less weight for removal plus the threads do not rust over time and make it hard to remove.
A: Refer to revised specifications Section…
