Northern Long-Eared Bat habitat protection practices in relationship to contracted work and tree mitigation within Wind Cave National Park
Due to the habitat of the Northern Long-Eared Bat ,an endangered species within Wind Cave National Park and the surrounding Southern Black Hills, trees used for nesting are not allowed to be removed from 1 June through July 31 unless inspected by Resource Management personnel. If the contractor identifies a tree (or trees) which require removal for safe work environment or reduction of negative impact to the project, the following steps should be followed:
1. Flag the tree[s] in a non-permanent manner (engineering ribbon, caution tape, etc.)
2. Contact the in-park Contracting Officer's Representative and request to have a tree[s] removed.
3. The COR will respond within 2 business days with Resource Management support for inspection of the tree[s]
4. If the tree[s] can be removed without impact to endangered species, the COR will coordinate for removal within 2 days of the inspection
5. If the tree[s] cannot be removed without impact, the COR will inform the Contracting
Officer of the situation and the possible impact to the project completion.
