1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SUMMARY:
The primary work of this project includes, but is not limited to, hazard tree mitigation work such as: inspection, delimbing, felling, and removal of hazardous limbs and trees located in the campground and picnic area of Devil’s Tower National Monument (DETO). Site Safety Plan shall include measures to protect personnel and visitors from hazard tree removal.
2.0 OBJECTIVES:
This project is intended to remove hazardous trees, limbs, and stumps to enhance visitor and employee safety in and around the campground and picnic areas of DETO.
3.0 BACKGROUND:
The tree species in the campground and picnic area are primarily cottonwood, scrub oak, and boxelder. A majority of the cottonwood trees are over 100 years old and are in need of maintenance by a professional tree service, as rotten or diseased trees are not always discernible by casual inspection. Cottonwoods rely on annual flooding to remain healthy and reproduce.
Flooding in these areas no longer occurs due to the Keyhole Dam upstream. In the late 1950’s as part of the Mission 66 Program the areas directly under these trees were developed into a high visitor use campground and picnic area with maintained lawns, walkways, concrete pads, etc. It has taken a concerted effort to regenerate the grove, through replanting, irrigation, and special protective measures to nurture young trees. Routine high winds and severe storms exacerbate the monument’s safety concern.
