About this file

This document is a Statement of Requirements for an External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) source at a wavelength of 4530 nm. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires the EC-QCL source to support an ongoing project in the Optical Measurements Group to perform high-resolution laser spectroscopy of radiocarbon dioxide in the mid-infrared.

The key technical specifications include: continuous wave (CW) output at 4530 nm, tuning range of 4450 nm to 4650 nm, output power of at least 100 mW, laser linewidth less than or equal to 10 MHz, and fast current modulation of at least 500 kHz. The delivery timeframe is within 52 weeks of contract award, with a one-year warranty or 1000 operating hours, whichever comes first. Final acceptance by the government will occur within 21 days of delivery once all performance specifications are met.

Statement of Requirements

External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) at 4530 nm

I. BACKGROUND:

The Optical Measurements Group in the Chemical Sciences Division of the Material Measurement Laboratory (MML) has an ongoing project to perform high resolution laser spectroscopy of radiocarbon dioxide in the mid-infrared. In part, this work is funded by the NETSE Pilot Program.

The group employs cavity ring-down spectroscopy in various forms to produce high quality spectral data products on biogenic and fossil-fuel samples of carbon dioxide. To advance the measurement goals of the group, a high resolution, continuously and widely tunable laser source in the 4500 nm wavelength region of the mid-infrared is required.

II. SPECIFICATIONS:

The Contractor shall provide one (1) External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) source with the following minimal technical specifications:

1. Continuous wave (CW) laser optical output at 4530 nm.

2. Wavelength tuning range inclusive of 4450 nm to 4650 nm.

3. Continuous, mode-hop-free tuning over more than 30 cm−1.

4. Optical output power of greater than or equal to 100 mW at 4530 nm.

5. Laser linewidth of less than or equal to 10 MHz at 1 s.

6. Fast current modulation depth of greater than or equal to 150 MHz, optical.

7. Fast current modulation with bandwidth greater than or equal to 500 kHz.

8. Piezo electric actuator modulation bandwidth, DC to greater than or equal to 100 Hz.

9. Laser controller with USB interface to PC.

10. Graphic user interface and software development kid for PC laser control.

11. Closed-loop water chiller to maintain CW laser operation.

III. DELIVERY:

Delivery shall be within fifty-two (52) weeks from date of award to NISTs Loading Dock, Gaithersburg, MD between the hours of 7:30AM to 3:30PM Monday through Friday, except for Federal Holidays
