About this file

This document is a Statement of Requirements for an External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) at 4530 nm. The National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Optical Measurements Group requires a high-resolution, continuously and widely tunable laser source in the 4500 nm wavelength region of the mid-infrared to advance their laser spectroscopy work on radiocarbon dioxide.

The key technical specifications include: continuous wave optical output at 4530 nm, wavelength tuning range of 4450 nm to 4650 nm, optical output power of at least 80 mW, laser linewidth of 10 MHz or less, current and piezoelectric tuning capabilities, and a laser controller with PC interface. The contractor shall provide one EC-QCL unit, manuals, cables, and a water chiller within 52 weeks of award, with a one-year warranty. Final acceptance will occur within 21 days of delivery once all performance requirements are met. This requirement is being procured under a Simplified Acquisition Procedures solicitation with NAICS code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing).

Statement of Requirements

External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) at 4530 nm

I. BACKGROUND

The Optical Measurements Group in the Chemical Sciences Division of the Material Measurement Laboratory (MML) has an ongoing project to perform high resolution laser spectroscopy of radiocarbon dioxide in the mid-infrared. In part, this work is funded by the NETSE Pilot Program.

The group employs cavity ring-down spectroscopy in various forms to produce high quality spectral data products on biogenic and fossil-fuel samples of carbon dioxide. To advance the measurement goals of the group, a high resolution, continuously and widely tunable laser source in the 4500 nm wavelength region of the mid-infrared is required.

II. SPECIFICATIONS

The Contractor shall provide one (1) External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (EC-QCL) source with the following minimal technical specifications:

1. Continuous wave (CW) laser optical output at 4530 nm.

2. Wavelength tuning range inclusive of 4450 nm to 4650 nm.

3. Continuous, mode-hop-free tuning over more than 30 cm−1.

4. Optical output power of greater than or equal to 80 mW at 4530 nm.

5. Laser linewidth of less than or equal to 10 MHz at 1 s.

6. Laser current wavelength modulation range of greater than 0.02 nm at 4530 nm

(equivalently 0.01 cm−1 at 2207.7 cm−1).

7. AC-coupled fast current modulation RF bandwidth greater than or equal to 200 kHz.

8. Piezoelectric transducer (PZT) modulation bandwidth from DC to greater than or equal to 50 Hz.

9. Laser controller with USB interface to PC.

10. Graphic user interface (GUI) and software development kit (SDK) for PC laser control.

11. Closed-loop water chiller to maintain CW laser operation.

III. DELIVERY

Delivery shall be within fifty-two (52) weeks from date of award to NISTs Loading Dock, Gaithersburg, MD between the hours of 7:30AM to 3:30PM Monday through Friday, except for Federal Holidays
