About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a solicitation by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for a 30kW solid state radio frequency amplifier. Key details include:
-
The solicitation seeks a water-cooled RF amplifier operating at 114 MHz within a 1 MHz bandpass, capable of producing a continuous output power of at least 30kW. The amplifier must have a gain of at least 60dB to achieve full power from a 30mW drive input and limit spurious noise and spectral purity issues. It must have standard RF connections and be mountable within a double-width rack space.
-
Additional requirements specify pulse operation capability as short as 1 microsecond while maintaining amplitude and phase matching to the RF drive signal. The amplifier will interface with a 30kW circulator to prevent reflected power issues.
-
Questions address duty cycle, VSWR requirements, input/output connection types, physical dimensions and power/frequency specifications. Responses provide clarification on the continuous wave and pulsing needs, protection from reflections, standard connector types required and ability to accommodate large physical dimensions.

General Information:
CLIN 0001 - Qty (1); High Power RF Amplifier that meets the following minimum specifications:
1) 114 MHz amplifier with a 1 MHz bandpass
2) Output power at least 30 kW continuous wave
3) Unit should be water cooled (NIST will provide necessary deionized water for cooling unit)
4) RS485 serial data com link, as well as WEB interface should be included
Question 1:
Is the amplifier required for CW or pulsed operation? If pulsed, please can you define the required duty cycle? Are there any special requirements for amplitude and phase stability during pulse?
Answer 1:
As stated in solicitation, the amplifier is usually run in CW mode, however, we do pulse the amplifier to drop the beam. We require pulses as short as 1 us, and expect the amplitude and phase to match our drive rf input signal. I.e., expect the amplifier to act as a simple gain block with high gain and high phase stability. We expect the gain to be sufficient such that the full output power of 30 kW can be achieved with a drive input of 30 mW. I.e., the amplifier (including any preamplifier that is required) gain should be at least 60 dB. Spurious noise from 60 HZ line power or any other source should be at least -60 dBC, and the spectral purity of the output should match that of the drive input with high fidelity.
Question 2:
What are the VSWR requirements. Is reflected power possible from the RF load?
Answer 2:
The amplifier will be protected by a 30 kW circulator at 114 MHz to prevent reflected power from returning back to the amplifier, so this should not be a concern.
Question 3:
Are there requirements for input and output connections to fit the existing RF feed/output feeder?
Answer 3:
The unit should have a standard 3 1/8” rf coaxial interface on the output, and a type-N connector for the drive.
Question 4:
Is there any space restrictions, or information about mounting in existing cabinets etc.?
Answer 4:
Within reason, we can accommodate a fairly large size. The current tube-based amplifier is in a double-with standard rack.
Also, we expect the unit to be water cooled and capable of operating continuously with a flow rate of 10 gallons/minute.
Question 5:
What kind of power do you need, 50Watts, 1000Watts, etc. What frequency you need, like 10KHz to 1000MHz or 1GHz to 8GHz, etc.
Answer 5:
Power = 30,000 Watts Frequency = 114 MHz with 1 MHz bandpass
