About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a concrete slab project for the USDA ARS in Wenatchee, Washington. The project involves removing 12 inches of material from the site and pouring a new six-inch concrete slab over six inches of crushed rock and gravel drainage material. The existing concrete foundation will be repaired where it meets the new slab. Drainage from the new slab should flow away from the building, and no additional drainage solutions such as dry wells are specified. The on-site HVAC condenser may be taken offline temporarily to complete the work.

Concrete Slab Quesons and Answers
Q1. The SOW indicates that six inches of material are to be removed, but it also indicates that six inches of concrete are to be poured on six inches of drainage material, such as crushed rock and gravel. Request clarificaon, as this actually implies 12 inches of material to be removed – six inches of drainage, plus six inches of concrete.
A1. 12 inches of material should be removed prior to placing 6” of base and 6” of concrete.
Q2. Do you want to facilitate drainage by way of fall/slope only, and if so to where? Or do you want a dry well or another soluon?
A2. Site currently drains predominately to the east away from the building and does not have any drainage issues. New slab should also drain away from building. No addional drainage such as a dry well are part of the project.
Q3. How long can the condenser – currently set on the ground toward the north end – be taken offline for work to commence?
A3. The condenser on the east exterior (that runs the two mini-splits in the adjacent offices) does not have a maximum duraon for which it can be offline at this me. A good-faith effort to minimize downme is sufficient.
Q4. Do you want any repair done to the concrete pad/foundaon that meets the proposed/required pad, or simply lay the pad and leave the current concrete in its current state?
A4. Repair loose concrete, spalls and cracks in building slab within 1’ of new concrete. Use manufactured sealants and patching compound for intended use.
