J. Unit Preparation Unit preparation is combining any treatments to achieve a desired outcome. This could be for prescribed burning purposes, fire suppression tactics, improved fire and public safety, and forest health. These attribute to fire and fuel management objectives and noncommercial timber objectives.

An example would be to thin the stand to a desired spacing, pile all material to a certain height and spacing, and lastly cover the piles with approved cover material. The task order will outline the treatment specifications.

Thinning criteria are the same as stated above.

Chipping criteria are the same as stated above.

Mastication criteria are the same as stated above.

Mowing criteria are the same as stated above.

Wet Mowing criteria are the same as stated above.

Harrowing criteria are the same as stated above.

Chaining criteria are the same as stated above.

Piling criteria are the same as stated above.

Skidding and Decking criteria are the same as stated above.

K. Control Line and Water Barring Control Line is a constructed or natural barrier and treated fire edge used to control a fire.

Treatment specifications for control lines are determined by the task order.

The Forest Service will designate control lines (if constructed) on the ground and provide the Contractor with a written description of the work standards in the Silvicultural Summary Prescription or the Task Order.

Unless otherwise specified in the task order, mechanical constructed control line consists of utilizing mechanized equipment to scrape a continuous mineral soil line, as determined in the task order. Cut material and existing down wood removed from the control line shall be scattered within the cutting area and not windrowed or otherwise concentrated adjacent to the control line. All existing stumps and snags within the control line clearing limits shall be cut flush at ground level and/or scraped around down to mineral soil to remove fuels and prevent ignition. Do not mix slash with side cast material and control line shall be constructed on the exterior/interior edge of the existing or newly constructed fuel break, or as specified for unit preparation.

The Contractor shall not move to a new unit without completion of treatment.

Waterbars are trenches cut at a 45-degree angle across the fireline to deflect water and reduce erosion.

All treatment specifications will be identified in the task order. These guidelines should be followed:

• Avoid waterbars on scablands with a slope less than 20%

• Waterbars should be directed outside the unit. They should follow natural topography and tailed out towards vegetation.

• Where waterbars drain into the unit, use brush, rocks, or other natural vegetation to limit erosion.

• Cut in the waterbar- do not simply push up loose soil.

• Modify the spacing to take best advantage of the terrain, rocks, roots, brush, and natural drainage.

Avoid unstable terrain.
