Project: Concrete Ramp and Walkway at USDA BRL

Location: Biosciences Research Laboratory, 1616 Albrecht Blvd N, Fargo, ND

58102

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Performance Work Statement: USDA-ARS in Fargo, ND, has a requirement for two (2) concrete projects. The first is to install an ADA compliant ramp, pad, and handrail, and the second is to install an 8’ by 22’ walkway from roadway to greenhouse door with an inclined slope to minimize a trip hazard. Pictures are included.

2.0 Background: The existing concrete ramp, pad, and handrail have exceeded it’s lifespan and must be replaced. Additionally, the exit to a greenhouse poses a trip hazard due to the absence of a sloped walkway from door to roadway similar to those which extend from adjacent greenhouse doors.

A. ADA Compliant Ramp

• Demolish and remove from premises the existing concrete ramp, section of damaged concrete pad adjacent to the doorway, and the existing handrail.

• Pour and install new concrete pad adjacent to doorway to replace damaged section, approximately 7 feet wide, 7 feet long, and 8 inches in height.

o *Concrete shall have a minimum strength of 4,500 PSI o *Ground under concrete shall be properly compacted.

• Pour and install new concrete ramp from pad into the parking lot. Ramp should be approximately 6 feet in width. Ramp should start at the same height as the concrete pad and then slope down into the parking lot resulting in approximately 10 feet in length.

o Ramp should have a 1:12 slope ratio o Ramp should have all edges protected to minimize risk of falling o Ramp should have bottom landing at least 60 inches in length o Ramp should contour with the existing curb and adjacence infrastructure.

o Ramp should merge seamlessly into the parking lot.

o *Concrete shall have a minimum strength of 4,500 PSI o *Ground under concrete shall be properly compacted.

• Replace the existing handrail with appropriate railing that is ADA compliant.

B. Concrete Walkway to Greenhouse

• Raise gradient of soil near the greenhouse doorway by approximately 10 inches by adding additional soil.

• Pour a concrete pad walkway connecting the greenhouse doorway to the nearby parking lot that is approximately 22 feet long and 8 feet wide.

o *Concrete shall have a minimum strength of 4,500 PSI o *Ground under concrete shall be properly compacted.
