Measures may include additional steps or precautions when lifting and handling the steel on site.

(2) Transport and delivery. Include the material safety data sheet (MSDS) with the material to the disposal facility. Ensure that loads transported from the site are adequately contained and covered to prevent dispersion in route to the disposal facility. Submit a copy of the receiving report from the disposal facility specifically acknowledging that the material being delivered is contaminated with lead paint.

(3) Lead paint removal. If the Contractor chooses to salvage the steel members, the paint may be removed subject to the following requirements:

(a) Remove lead contaminated paint in an appropriate containment facility;

(b) Comply with the requirements as listed in Subsection 563.05; and

(c) Manifest and dispose of lead contaminated waste according to the requirements of 40 CFR 260 through 268 – Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

(e) Windrowing Construction Slash. Place construction slash outside the roadway in neat, compacted windrows approximately parallel to and along the toe line of embankment slopes. Do not permit the top of the windrows to extend above subgrade. Use construction equipment to matt down all material in a windrow to form a compact and uniform pile. Construct breaks of at least 15 feet at least every 200 feet in a windrow. Do not place windrows against trees. Obtain approval for pioneer roads. A pioneer road may be constructed to provide an area for placement of windrows, provided the excavated material is kept within the clearing limits and does not adversely affect the road construction.

(f) Scattering. Scatter pieces of wood less than 3 inches in diameter and 3 feet in length within the clearing limits. Do not place construction slash in lakes, meadows, streams, or streambeds.

Immediately remove construction slash that interferes with drainage structures.

Scatter construction slash outside the clearing limits without damaging trees. Limb all logs. Place logs and stumps away from trees, positioned so they will not roll, and are not on top of one another. Limb and scatter other construction slash to reduce slash concentrations.

(g) Chipping or Grinding. Use an approved chipping machine to grind slash and stumps greater than 3 inches in diameter and longer than 3 feet. Deposit chips or ground woody material on embankment slopes or outside the roadway to a loose depth less than 6 inches. Minor amounts of chips or ground woody material may be permitted within the roadway if they are thoroughly mixed with soil and do not form a layer.

(h) Debris Mat. Use tree limbs, tops, cull logs, split stumps, wood chunks, and other debris to form a mat upon which construction equipment is operated. Place stumps upside down and blend stumps into the mat.

(i) Decking Firewood Material. Remove brush from decks. Limb and deck logs that do not meet Utilization Standards according to Subsection 201.04 as directed by the CO. Cut logs to lengths less than 30 feet. Ensure that logs stacks are stable and free of brush and soil.

(j) Removal to designated locations. Remove construction slash to designated locations.

(k) Piling. Pile construction slash in designated areas. Place and construct piles so that if the piles are burned, the burning will not damage remaining trees. Keep piles free of dirt from stumps. Cut un-merchantable logs into lengths of less than 20 feet.

(l) Placing Slash on Embankment Slopes. Place construction slash on completed embankment slopes to reduce soil erosion. Place construction slash as flat as practicable on the completed slope. Do not place slash closer than 2 feet below subgrade. Priority for use of available slash is for: (1) through fills; (2) insides of curves; and (3) ditch relief outlets.

(m) Hydrological Sensitive Placement. Where required use this method in combination with other designated methods to dispose of material to reduce erosion and to aid in re-vegetation:

This work also includes the installation of articulated concrete block revetment mat.

Material

Cellular Concrete Block 725.10 Revetment Cable 709.02 Geotextile type IV 714.01

253.03 General. Delete the first sentence and substitute the following:

Survey according to Section 152 and verify the limits of the structure.

253.05 Structure Erection. Add the following to the first paragraph:

For gabion structures, grade the foundation for a width equal to the width of the gabion plus 2 feet. Where gabions are set on rocky foundations, place 6 inches of select granular backfill under the baskets.

253.08 Revet Mattresses. Add the following:

(a) Design Prefabricate articulated concrete block revetment mat as an assembly of concrete blocks, with specific hydraulic capacities, laced with revetment cables. Articulated concrete block revetment mat may be assembled on-site. The concrete cells or blocks may be open or closed as described and may vary in dimension. The blocks will be square and should not be less than 8” or more than 16” in dimension. The open cell units have two (2) vertical openings of rectangular cross section with sufficient wall thickness to resist breakage during shipping and installation. Secure all blocks in any given mat with a minimum of two (2) cables each.

Incorporate interlocking surfaces of each block that minimize lateral displacement of the blocks within the mats when lifted by the longitudinal revetment cables.

Interlocking surfaces must not protrude beyond the perimeter of the blocks to such an extent that they reduce the flexibility or articulation capability of the cellular mats or become damaged or broken when the mats are lifted during shipment or placement. Once in place the interlocking surfaces of the mats shall minimize the lateral displacement of the blocks even if the cables should become damaged or removed. A minimum of 18° between any given row or column of blocks in the uplift direction and a minimum of 45° in the downward direction must be maintained in the mats. Insert cables into the mats allowing for lifting loops at one end of the mat with the corresponding cable ends spliced together to form a lifting loop at the other end of the mat. Insert cables after sufficient time has been allowed for the concrete to complete the curing process. Place the articulated concrete block revetment mat on the filter fabric.

(b) Physical Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(c) Grading

Grade the slope to a smooth plane surface to achieve good contact between the slope face and the geotextile, and between the geotextile and the entire bottom surface of the articulated concrete blocks. Remove or re-grade slope from all deformities, roots, grade stakes, and stones which project normal to the local slope face. Place compacted homogenous material to fill all holes, “pockmarks”, slope board teeth marks, footprints, or other voids greater than 1.0 inch in depth normal to the local slope face. Place compacted homogenous material to fill all grooves or depressions greater than 0.5 inches in depth normal to the local slope face with a dimension exceeding 1.0 foot in any direction. Uniformly compact the slope and slope face as directed by COR. Excavate and prepare anchor trenches, flanking trenches, and toe trenches or aprons according to the plans. Uniformly grade the anchor trench hinge-point at the top of the slope to prevent dips or bumps greater than 0.5 inches over or under the local grade. Uniformly grade the anchor trench hinge-point to the width that allows good contact between the articulated concrete blocks and the underlying grade at the hinge point. Obtain approval of the subgrade from the COR prior to placement of filter fabric and articulated concrete blocks.

(d) Placement

Place the articulated concrete blocks on top on the subgrade. No individual block within the plane of placed articulated concrete blocks shall protrude more than one inch or as otherwise specified by the COR. If placed as a large mattress, use a spreader bar or other approved device to lift and place the mats in the proper position with a crane or other approved equipment. Place mats side-by-side and/or end-to-end so that they abut one another. The geotextile shall be laid from the downstream end of project to the upstream end, so the geotextile joints are shingled to direct flow over the joint and to prevent undermining. Intimate contact with the subsurface is critical to the systems performance in the field. The gaps between each mat shall not be greater than 2 inches. The upstream two (2) rows of each mat system shall be entrenched and buried at a 45° downward direction into the ground. Type 2 riprap shall be used to fill the entrenched edge. Backfill the trench flush with the top of the blocks. Installation instructions may be altered per manufacturer’s recommendation.
