Questions: FATS Skinny Trail Maintenance
1. It says trail tread to be 2 ft. but dips and water bars to be 4 ft. can we use a bigger mini excavator to blade trail?
Yes, we have answered a related question previously and that an excavator up to four feet wide would work for this trail we believe. Final trail tread width to be approximately 2 feet wide, recognizing there will be variations over the full length. The 4 ft wide number for the water bars and dips is just to acknowledge that these structures must be wider than the trail tread to work.
They may need to be 5 or more feet wide in places. This is to be determined by the experienced trail builder, who knows that sustainable trail building is primarily about controlling the water flow across the trail. We encourage all contractors to go to the site for a pre-bid look. We did not establish a pre-bid meeting, because the site is open and available all the time.
2. Can we use 4wheeler to get fuel and equipment into the trail and to pull a 4 foot drag behind it to smooth up the trail tread .
Yes, any ruts caused by machines should be raked/smoothed out before completion.
3. In bid item 2 price for tandem load of trail mix is that delivered to trail head and dumped or is that to be hauled in on the trail and placed if to be placed on trail how far from dump site to places on trail and what is size limit on equipment to haul it in.
See related answer below. I calculated that approximately half of the tandem load of slate will be used on the trail, and the rest will be stockpiled for future use near the trailhead, or as approved by the COR.
4. Could you list the length and width and thickness of the decking boards on the two bridges that need replaced.
You should have the solicitation Excel spreadsheet titled: FATS-Skinny Trail work items list. It says:
Replace deck boards Bridge 4x16 Foot. replace deck with treated 2x6's or equivalent And Replace deck boards Bridge 4x10 Foot; replace deck with treated 2x6's or equivalent Please see newly attached Attachment 07. This document is the most important document that defines the work.
5. Is the price for the load of slate is that delivered to the trail head are placed along the trail as needed if so what is the width of the trail to get it to the site needed.
The question is not written clearly, but I think I understand the intent. The slate is to be used along the trail where specified, and the remainder is to be stockpiled for use after the contract period for trail maintenance. Some parts of the trail can be accessed by 4x4 truck via earthen access roads and a powerline easement. Easement access will need to be coordinated with the power company but is not expected to be a problem. The trailway cannot generally be driven by a standard pickup truck. It is a single track trail and can generally be accessed with an ATV/UTV with an expected maximum width of about 4 feet.
6. When do you expect to start this work now or in spring?
Start/Notice to Proceed date is to be determined by the Contracting Officer. We would like work to start within 30-60 days of award. We understand contractors have other on-going projects, and with the Contracting Officer’s approval, can wait a few weeks for the NTP. Ideally, this work should be done before summer.
