Question 6: What is the minimum numbers of cones present to require that a tree is climbed?
Answer 6: The general guidelines are ¼ of a bushel as seed need or cone crop mandates. Estimated number for Ponderosa is 50 cones and Incense Cedar is 200.
Question 7: Are all trees in the natural stands: “individual preselected trees and registered trees for genetics representing a seed zone” or are they otherwise pre-selected trees by the government. Will additional reforestation seed trees be selected in their vicinity and to what extent will they be grouped in the same area?
Answer 7: Cone Crop and seed need dependent. The trees will be preselected by the Government and reforestation trees will be selected as available.
Question 8: What is the approximate percentage of “legacy trees” (over 175 years old) selected to be climbed?
Answer 8: Cone Crop and seed need dependent.
Question 9: In the FS Transportation legend, orange roads are described as "Basic Custodial Care(Closed)". Are those roads open to contractors i.e. cone collector vehicles?
Answer 9: The status of the roads will be subject to other activities in the area, and if they have been opened or have self closed with down material. The Government has no intention of opening roads for this project at this time.
Question 10: How does Fremont-Winema define a genetic site? What are the acronyms SPA, SO, SPA, EP and MSP? Do these distinctions affect cone collection or tree selection in the sites with different acronyms?
Answer 10:
SPA – Seed production Area SO – Seed Orchard SPA – see above EP – Evaluation Plantation MSP – Mass selection Plantation
The sites may or may not lend themselves for collection with a lift as site conditions change over the course of 5 years.
