M. Galvanizing and Finish: Hot-dip galvanized pipe, pipe posts, pipe braces, pipe caps, and gate frames shall not be used unless specifically approved by the Owner. Galvanized barbed wire, galvanized tie wire, clips, and miscellaneous gate hardware are acceptable where specified or where compatible with adjacent materials. Coat all non-galvanized steel posts, braces, pipe caps, gate frames, gate components, and other exposed non-galvanized steel in accordance with Paragraph 2.01.O.
N. Concrete: Concrete for post foundations and post infill shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3,000 psi at 28 days unless otherwise shown on the Drawings.
O. Coating of Non-Galvanized Steel: After fabrication and welding, clean non-galvanized steel surfaces of dirt, oil, grease, rust, mill scale, weld slag, and other foreign material. Where muriatic acid is used, thoroughly rinse and neutralize the surfaces and allow them to dry before painting. Apply one coat of rust-inhibiting primer and two coats of exterior-grade oil-based black paint compatible with the primer. Touch up damaged coatings after installation.
3.00 EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION
A. Indicate the locations of fence lines, gates, pull and brace posts, gate posts, and corner and end posts with suitable stakes. Stake fence lines at intervals not to exceed one hundred
(100') feet or line of sight, whichever is less.
B. Clear and grub fence lines as needed in preparation for installation. Provide adequate clearances along both sides of the fence line.
C. Obtain Owner Representative's approval of the staked fence line before setting posts.
3.02 SETTING POSTS
A. Steel posts shall be driven unless otherwise specified.
B. Holes for installing fence posts shall be at least 6 inches larger than the diameter or side dimension of the posts. Set all posts centered in their footings.
C. Drive steel corner, brace, anchor, pull, and gate posts to the minimum embedment shown on the Drawings.
D. Set all posts in a vertical position, plumb and in line.
E. Earth backfill around posts shall be thoroughly tamped in layers not thicker than 4 inches and shall completely fill the posthole up to the ground surface. Concrete backfill around posts shall be rodded into place in layers not thicker than 12 inches and shall completely fill the posthole to the surface of the ground. Backfill, either earth or concrete, shall be crowned-up around posts at the ground surface.
F. Set brace and anchor all corner, end, pull, brace and gate posts before stretching barbed wire between line posts.
G. No stress shall be applied to posts set in concrete for a period of not less than 24 hours following the development of a firm set of the concrete.

3.03 CORNER ASSEMBLIES
A. Corner assemblies shall be installed at all points where the fence alignment changes 15 degrees or more.
3.04 END PANELS
A. End panels shall be built at gates and fence ends.
3.05 PULL POST ASSEMBLIES
A. Pull post assembly (bracing within a section of straight fence) shall be installed at the following locations:
1. In straight fence sections, at intervals not to exceed 660 feet.
2. At any point where the vertical angle described by two adjacent reaches of wire is upward and exceeds 10 degrees.
3. At the beginning and end of each curved fence section.
3.06 ATTACHING BARBED WIRE TO POSTS
A. The barbed wire shall be placed on the side of the post opposite the area being protected except for installation along curved sections.
B. The barbed wire shall be placed on the outside for installation along curved sections.
C. Attach each barbed wire strand to each line T-post with one clip.
D. Attach barbed wire to line pipe posts with galvanized tie wire or approved pipe-post fasteners compatible with the barbed wire coating.
E. Wire shall be spliced by means of a Western Union splice or by suitable splice sleeves applied with a tool designed for that purpose. The Western Union splice shall have no less than eight wraps of each end about the other. All wraps shall be tightly wound and closely spaced. Splices made with splice sleeves shall have a tensile strength no less than 80 percent of the strength of the wire being spliced.
F. Each horizontal fence wire shall be attached to brace, corner, or end posts with a double wrap of the wire tied back with a minimum of 4 wraps. At pull locations, the horizontal fence shall be attached as previously described. At junctions of fence wire and posts where ties are not specified, the wire shall be secured to the post with standard wire clips or fasteners.
G. At changes in vertical fence alignment, line posts or pull-panel posts that restrain upward pull of the fence strands shall be anchored by setting such posts in concrete.
H. Tie wire shall be used at post locations where there is a change in vertical alignment of the fence that produces upward or downward pull. A tie wire of 9 gage galvanized wire shall be secured to the post with two wraps and tied 3 inches above the top fence wire (where the pull is downward), or 6 inches below the bottom fence wire (where the pull is upward) and shall be extended to each successive fence wire, securing each in position by two close-drawn wraps.

3.07 STAYS
A. Stays shall be attached to the fencing at the spacing shown on the drawings to ensure maintenance of the proper spacing of the fence wire strands.
3.08 CROSSINGS AT DEPRESSIONS AND WATERCOURSES
A. Where fencing is installed parallel to the ground surface, the line posts subject to upward pull shall be anchored.
1. If the barbed wire is installed parallel to the ground surface, the line posts subject to uplift shall be anchored by means of extra embedment or by special anchors as detailed on the drawings.
2. If the barbed wire is installed with the top wire straight and parallel to the ground surface on either side of the depression, extra length posts shall be used to allow normal post embedment. Unless otherwise specified, excess space between the bottom of the fence and the ground shall be closed with extra strands of barbed wire or with netting.
3.09 CLEAN AND ADJUST
A. Adjust gates to permit free and easy openings without binding.
B. Repair damaged paint coatings on painted T-posts. Replace damaged barbed wire, galvanized tie wire, clips, fasteners, and gate hardware where coating damage impairs corrosion protection.
C. Remove demolished fencing, debris, and excess new fencing materials from the site.
D. Repair damaged coatings on non-galvanized steel posts, braces, pipe caps, gate frames, and gate components. Prepare damaged areas and apply the rust-inhibiting primer and two coats of oil-based black paint specified in Paragraph 2.01.O. Feather repair coatings into adjacent sound coatings to provide a continuous and uniform finish.
