About this file
This is a Voith Turbo DIWA Service Bulletin (#004C, issued March 5, 2009) providing oil analysis specifications for transmission maintenance, applicable to the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority's (SORTA) five-year oil and fluid analysis contract for its bus fleet. The bulletin establishes maximum particle levels and viscosity standards for transmission oil condition monitoring across all DIWA transmission models. For new transmissions with less than 18,000 miles, viscosity specifications at 40°C range from 155-169 SSU dropping to 128-142 SSU constant (or 33-36 cST dropping to 27-30 cST constant), while at 100°C the range is 49-51 SSU dropping to 42.5-55.3 SSU constant (or 7-7.5 cST dropping to 5-5.5 cST constant). For transmissions exceeding 18,000 miles, identical viscosity parameters apply. Oil must be changed when analysis indicates a 10 percent or greater increase in SSU or cST values, indicating deterioration.
Maximum permissible solid metal content levels include copper at 1,000 PPM, lead at 1,000 PPM, iron at 300 PPM, and all other solid metals at 100 PPM. The bulletin notes that when oil analysis reports indicate increases of 25 percent or more from normal baseline levels in PPM readings, this signals a potential transmission problem requiring corrective action per testing lab instructions. Maximum oxidation TAN value is 3.0. The document includes a wear metal origins table identifying which transmission components (planet gears, TB clutch plates, roller bearings, friction discs, and others) produce iron, copper, aluminum, chrome, tin, lead, and silicon particles, enabling the laboratory to diagnose specific wear patterns during SORTA's routine fleet maintenance analysis program.

Transmissions: All
Subject: Oil Analysis Maximum Particle Levels
Purpose: Check Condition of the Transmission
Reference: N/A
NOTE: Oil Sample Analysis and Establishing of Normal Values. The oil testing labs set a normal content level for each metal in every transmission. Averaging the results of that metal from the first three or four analysis reports sets these levels. The normal levels may vary in every transmission.
New transmissions with less than 18,000 miles
VISCOSITY
40°C (100°F) 155-169 SSU drop to 128-142 SSU constant or 33-36 cST drop to 27-30 cST constant
100°C (210°F) 49-51 SSU drop to 42.5-55.3 SSU constant or 7-7.5 cST drop to 5-5.5 cST constant
When oil analysis indicates an increase of 10% or more SSU or cST, the oil has deteriorated and must changed. This would be for users who rely upon oil analysis to direct them for proper oil changes.
CONTENTS OF SOLID METAL
Copper (Cu) maximum level 1000 PPM Lead (Pb) maximum level 1000 PPM Iron (Fe) maximum level 300 PPM ALL other solid metals maximum level 100 PPM
When an oil analysis report indicates an increase from the normal levels by 25% or more, of the PPM levels, it is a sign of a potential problem within the transmission. The testing lab then issues instructions that must be followed to determine if there is a problem.
OXIDATION
TAN VALUE maximum level 3.0
