- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of Pittsburgh received a $550,000 Project Grant award dated June 15, 2026, from the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Engineering (Engineering program, CFDA 47.041) to develop lysosome-directed gene therapy strategies that improve the long-term viability of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The research will address the critical failure of intracortical electrodes, which cease functioning in approximately 50% of implants within one...
Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Pittsburgh received a $2.0 million Project Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director under the Research Infrastructure Programs (CFDA 93.351) on July 15, 2026, to acquire a United Imaging uNEuroExplorer brain Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanner. This specialized imaging instrument is designed expressly for human brain imaging and will replace a legacy Siemens ECAT EXACT HR+ scanner installed in 1996 that has reached end-of-life status. The uNEuroExplorer scanner features superior technical specifications including a 50-centimeter patient bore, 49.5-centimeter axial field of view, depth-of-interaction detector encoding, and system sensitivity of 46 kilocounts per second per megabecquerel, enabling improved signal-to-noise characteristics, statistical quality, and quantitative accuracy critical to ongoing neuroimaging research. This instrumentation acquisition will directly support the University of Pittsburgh PET Center's highly productive research program, which encompasses 25 NIH-funded neuroimaging projects across eight academic departments at the School of Medicine. The center has an established track record of translational success, including development of the first hybrid PET/CT scanner and FDA-approved amyloid imaging agents used globally in Alzheimer's disease research and diagnostics. The new scanner's enhanced performance and design optimized for the center's predominantly neuroscience-focused research environment (approximately 85 percent of usage) will sustain productivity for 10 major user projects and 5 additional projects currently impacted by equipment limitations. The award period extends from July 15, 2026 through July 14, 2027.
