The research examines nonfatal drug overdoses in adolescents and young adults to identify barriers to behavioral health treatment connection and to generate evidence for tailored prevention...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Rutgers, The State University $118,593 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Assistance Listing). The award funds research investigating the role of dorsal horn interneurons expressing the serotonin 6 receptor (5HTR6+ interneurons) in sensorimotor integration within the spinal cord under both normal conditions and following spinal cord...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey (doing business as RBHS-School of Nursing) $2,107,844 on September 15, 2025, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to conduct a longitudinal mixed-methods study of nicotine pouch adoption and use patterns among U.S. adults. The research combines a nationally representative longitudinal survey with qualitative interviews to examine who uses nicotine pouches, reasons for adoption,...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, School of Nursing, $474,749 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing functional maturation and adult subtype diversification in spinal motor neurons. The project addresses postnatal...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded New Jersey Institute of Technology $553,292 on March 11, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to engineer an in vitro three-dimensional tissue construct for studying peripheral nerve regeneration. The recipient will develop 3D hollow channel systems seeded with embryonic dorsal root ganglia explants and coated with specific extracellular matrix...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Massachusetts Lowell $2.272 million on June 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to discover novel, non-opioid, non-addictive analgesics derived from marine microbial natural products. The award funds a phenotypic screening effort combining human induced pluripotent stem cell sensory neurons and glia cultured on multi-well microelectrode arrays to characterize sensory neuron...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, doing business as RBHS-School of Nursing, $1.413 million on July 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop, refine, and test a telehealth-delivered motivational interviewing intervention for young adults who use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). The project will develop and test a cessation-induction intervention designed to prompt quit attempts in...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $139,612 on February 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to support research integrating artificial intelligence and co-production methods to analyze communications in online substance use disorder recovery groups. Dr. Xiangyu Tao, a postdoctoral associate at the Rutgers Addiction Research Center, will conduct research examining how engagement in online peer support...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $617,246 on September 26, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the toxicity of lipid-rich alpha-synuclein inclusions in Parkinson's disease pathology. The research examines Lewy bodies and related lipid-rich alpha-synuclein inclusions prevalent in the substantia nigra and brainstem regions....
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey (RBHS-School of Nursing) $787,111 on September 5, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and validate a humanized antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) targeting nerve injury-specific long non-coding RNA (NIS) as a non-opioid, non-addictive analgesic for chronic neuropathic pain. The R61 phase includes design, synthesis, and purification of translationally suitable ASOs; screening candidate compounds for inhibitory efficacy against high glucose- or paclitaxel-induced NIS elevation and downstream gene expression in cultured human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived sensory neurons; evaluation of selectivity, specificity, and cytotoxicity in these human cell cultures and in cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons from monkey or human donors; and validation of optimal NIS ASO intrathecal efficacy on human NIS overexpression in mouse microinjected dorsal root ganglia. Work is performed in Newark, New Jersey. The award period runs through February 29, 2028. The federal program supports basic, clinical, translational, and implementation research to develop prevention, diagnosis, and treatment approaches for drug use, misuse, addiction, and overdose.
