- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $540,901 on April 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying dopamine signaling dysfunction in advanced Parkinson's disease. The research examines how striatal projection neurons become maladaptive during disease progression and why L-DOPA therapy loses efficacy over time. The work focuses...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $618,523 under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) on September 1, 2026, for research on scalable, affordable artificial intelligence-driven clinical decision support for movement disorders. The project addresses misdiagnosis and access barriers in Parkinson's disease care, particularly the underdiagnosis of psychiatric symptoms and limited...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $1,297,188 on May 8, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate neuroinflammatory epitranscriptomic mechanisms in Parkinson's disease. The research examines the role of the ALKBH5 demethylase enzyme in microglial neuroinflammatory responses triggered by alpha-synuclein aggregates, a hallmark...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Washington University $163,079 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct research on cerebrospinal fluid and skin biomarkers of cognitive decline in Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia. The research validates candidate synaptic protein biomarkers (neuronal pentraxin 2 and somatostatin) in cerebrospinal fluid that may...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $635,512 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop and validate an automated deep brain stimulation programming platform for patients with Parkinson's disease. The project will develop machine learning algorithms and a closed-loop automated system to optimize deep brain stimulation parameters—including contact...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Brigham and Women's Hospital $492,250 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to identify the palmitoyltransferase for glucocerebrosidase trafficking receptor LIMP2 and restore GBA1 function in Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia. The research investigates palmitoylation—modification of proteins by the fatty acid palmitate—as a...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Duke University $1.806 million on May 11, 2026, under CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to investigate LRRK2 signaling in the progression of Parkinson's disease and dementia. The research applies ultra-sensitive single molecule array assays to assess LRRK2 signaling—specifically phosphorylation of the RAB10 substrate—in biobanked tissues and fluids from Parkinson's disease...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston $722,153 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Assistance Listing Project Grant R61NS151436). The recipient will develop and validate a seed amplification assay to detect alpha-synuclein...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $460,839 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to cultivate rigor in movement neuroscience research by aligning professional incentives with rigorous study design practices. Emory will establish community-focused programs to address the reproducibility crisis in movement neuroscience by creating incentives that...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Northwestern University $566,529 on April 24, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate age-related deficits in trophic support of dopamine neurons in preclinical models of Parkinson's disease. The research examines cell-type-specific alterations in LRRK2G2019S mice to determine how the LRRK2 mutation affects neuroprotective signaling...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $927,014 on August 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to validate a diagnostic lipid biomarker panel for idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The R61 phase of this project will develop a quantitative liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry assay for eight lipid biomarkers discovered in red blood cells that distinguish idiopathic Parkinson's disease from controls with 89% accuracy in prior research. Emory will establish normal reference ranges for each biomarker using a representative patient population from the Emory Goizueta Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, refine the lipid panel to identify the optimal set of biomarkers for accurate discrimination between idiopathic Parkinson's disease and controls, and validate diagnostic accuracy and disease specificity against Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy body disease. The project targets greater than 90% sensitivity and 80% specificity to progress to the R33 phase for clinical evaluation in a third cohort. Performance occurs in Atlanta, Georgia. The project runs through July 31, 2029.
