The research addresses disease...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $1.878 million to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville on September 7, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to interrogate alpha-synuclein aggregate-associated proteomes and identify modifiers of Lewy body disease. The project, running through August 31, 2029, employs...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $418,489 to the University of Florida on September 1, 2026, for exploration of potential treatments targeting alpha-synuclein in Parkinson's disease under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research to develop novel therapeutics for Parkinson's disease,...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $927,014 on August 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to validate a diagnostic lipid biomarker panel for idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The R61 phase of this project will develop a quantitative liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry assay for eight lipid biomarkers discovered in red blood cells that distinguish idiopathic...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $671,445 to Weill Medical College of Cornell University on May 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds development of an integrated pipeline for early Parkinson's disease prediction and disease-modifying drug repurposing. The work targets the...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $1,297,188 on May 8, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate neuroinflammatory epitranscriptomic mechanisms in Parkinson's disease. The research examines the role of the ALKBH5 demethylase enzyme in microglial neuroinflammatory responses triggered by alpha-synuclein aggregates, a hallmark...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Northwestern University $566,529 on April 24, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate age-related deficits in trophic support of dopamine neurons in preclinical models of Parkinson's disease. The research examines cell-type-specific alterations in LRRK2G2019S mice to determine how the LRRK2 mutation affects neuroprotective signaling...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Washington University $163,079 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct research on cerebrospinal fluid and skin biomarkers of cognitive decline in Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia. The research validates candidate synaptic protein biomarkers (neuronal pentraxin 2 and somatostatin) in cerebrospinal fluid that may...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $670,266 on January 20, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to map the epigenomic and spatial transcriptomic landscape in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The project characterizes shared and distinct transcriptional changes between Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Alzheimer's...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston $722,153 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Assistance Listing Project Grant R61NS151436). The recipient will develop and validate a seed amplification assay to detect alpha-synuclein aggregates in blood and urine samples from patients with Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson's disease dementia, and multiple system atrophy. The assay technology is currently validated only for cerebrospinal fluid detection, which requires lumbar puncture; adaptation to peripheral bodily fluids would enable non-invasive early diagnosis and routine screening for synucleinopathies at the preclinical stage. The work addresses the pressing diagnostic gap in these conditions, where up to 70 percent of dopaminergic neurons are already lost by the time clinical diagnosis occurs. Performance occurs in Houston, Texas, with work ongoing through August 31, 2028. The University of Texas System serves as the parent organization of the recipient institution.
