Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, through its Kaiser Foundation Research Institute, received a $370,000 project grant awarded April 1, 2026, by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The research will establish evidence-based targets for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics in adults with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) by leveraging contemporary cohort data from approximately 4,000 patients at Kaiser Permanente Northern California (2016-2025). Using causal machine learning models, the project will identify optimal targets for eight standard CGM metrics that minimize the risk of four complication categories: hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, microvascular events, and cardiovascular events, with analyses stratified by patient risk profiles (older/high-risk versus younger/healthier populations). The deliverables include two primary aims: (1) identification of optimal CGM metric targets associated with the lowest risk for each complication category; and (2) assessment of the proportion of patients achieving novel optimized targets and comparison with American Diabetes Association standards. The research products will inform clinical decision-making, quality improvement initiatives, and future Type 1 Diabetes care guidelines. The project is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2027, with performance conducted in Pleasanton, California.Federal Project Grant Award Summary
