The award funds development of three key research pillars: explainable sequence models that discover simple rules for diverse regulatory functions; novel architectures to predict long-range regulatory interactions...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded The University of Chicago $451,000 on April 1, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to investigate the impact of demography and selection on the genetic architecture of human traits. The research develops a novel genomic test for stabilizing selection and assortative mating based on linkage disequilibrium patterns and recombination signatures in genome-wide association study data. The work...
- The National Human Genome Research Institute awarded the University of Illinois a cooperative agreement worth $1,829,758 on April 21, 2026, under the Human Genome Research program (CFDA 93.172) to develop and implement population genomic screening for CDC Tier 1 hereditary conditions in primary care settings. The recipient will develop a scalable population genomic screening (PGS) model by expanding the TESTMIGENES care delivery model, integrating community engagement, culturally appropriate...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded The University of Chicago $817,976 on August 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop single molecule footprinting methods for studying gene regulation in cardiac differentiation and disease. The recipient will combine methyltransferase-based chromatin measurement with native long-read sequencing to assess chromatin accessibility, nucleosome positioning, transcription factor binding, and DNA...
- The National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded The University of Chicago $779,000 on September 15, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to investigate the financial, operational, and quality impacts of management consultants on nonprofit health care delivery organizations in the United States. The project applies modern empirical methods to evaluate consultant costs and effects by leveraging IRS Form 990 tax filings for nonprofit health care...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the University of Illinois $526,483 on May 14, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to develop enhanced epigenome editing technologies for controlling mammalian gene expression. The award funds development of a toolkit of programmable epigenome editors capable of activating gene expression in vivo through three integrated aims. Aim 1...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded Northwestern University $356,311 on April 1, 2026, under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859, Project Grant R01GM162074) to discover and functionally validate hepatic expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) affecting drug metabolism and response. The recipient will identify regulatory variants that affect drug-metabolizing enzymes using multi-omics data gathered in hepatocytes, determine eQTL function...
The National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded The University of Chicago $137,760 under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) on September 1, 2026, to develop and translate statistical software tools for genomics research. The award funds development of high-quality statistical software addressing three areas where existing tools are lacking: fine-mapping of health- and disease-related quantitative trait loci (QTLs), including molecular QTLs; gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA); and discovery of overlapping cluster structure in genomic data. The fine-mapping software will enable discovery of genetic variants contributing to health and disease outcomes and will identify genetic variants affecting molecular traits using data from assays such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and ATAC-seq. The GSEA software tools will provide a new approach to gene set enrichment analyses, organize results with reduced redundancy, and situate findings within known biology. Both toolsets will be developed within a single integrated suite, as they are based on a common statistical framework. The award represents translation of methodological innovations from the ongoing NHGRI-funded research project "Genome Analysis: Statistical Methods and Applications" (R01HG002585) into accessible and comprehensible software for scientists. Performance occurs in Illinois, USA. The period of performance runs September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029.
