Northwestern University received a $356,311 Project Grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859), effective April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2030. The award supports research to discover and functionally validate hepatic expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs)—regulatory genetic variants that affect drug-metabolizing enzymes in the liver. This research addresses a critical gap in precision medicine by expanding multi-omic data collection and analysis to include African ancestry populations, whose representation in publicly available databases is currently limited. Under this award, Northwestern will deliver three primary research products: identification of regulatory variants affecting drug-metabolizing enzymes using multi-omics data from hepatocytes; functional characterization of eQTLs through massively parallel reporter assays in HepG2 cell models; and assessment of eQTL effects on enzyme activity using prime editing technology. These deliverables will generate novel biomarkers and advance understanding of genetic factors influencing drug response and metabolism, with particular emphasis on improving predictive capabilities across diverse populations.Federal Grant Award Summary
