- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Silicon Kidney LLC $354,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop an Intracorporeal Hemodialysis System (IHEMO) enabling home hemodialysis for end-stage kidney disease patients. Silicon Kidney LLC will develop and advance toward commercialization an implanted hemodialyzer (hemocartridge) that creates permanent vascular connections...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Minnesota Healthsolutions Corporation $1,068,096 on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and evaluate a prototype novel bladder catheterization device. The device addresses a critical clinical gap in urologic management. Over one million Americans—including more than 250,000 people with spinal cord injury, 120,000 with spina bifida,...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Houston System $167,696 on August 27, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop intelligent bioelectronic implants for diagnosis and neuromodulation of neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The award funds research to address urological dysfunction following spinal cord injury, particularly neurogenic bladder and detrusor sphincter...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Kscube, LLC $315,335 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop a real-time, non-invasive urinary oxygen monitoring system for acute kidney injury prevention. The recipient will advance development of a novel continuous kidney-stress monitor for use during surgery and in intensive care units. The technology provides real-time detection of...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $610,736 to Maguro Surgical Inc. on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop the MagStone system, a magnetic device for endoscopic retrieval of kidney stone fragments. The MagStone system addresses a clinical gap in current ureteroscopy practice. Standard wire baskets remove stone fragments one at a time and cannot effectively retrieve...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Quintero & Kontopoulos PLLC, doing business as The Fetal Institute, $301,099 on July 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and refine the Q-Shunt, a novel fetal vesicoamniotic shunting device designed to treat fetal lower urinary tract obstruction. The recipient will conduct Phase I SBIR research on an optimized Q-Shunt prototype featuring...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded In Vivo Microsystems Technologies, LLC $3,067,867 on September 19, 2025, for a Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research project under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). IVMT will conduct a Phase 2 multi-center in-vivo study of a near-infrared fluorescently-labeled peptide heterodimer targeting EGFR and ERBB2 for detection of biliary intra-epithelial neoplasia. The...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital $789,682 on August 25, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research into the mechanisms by which the renal urothelium senses and responds to urinary tract obstruction and mitigates obstructive nephropathy. The project investigates how the renal urothelium undergoes remodeling during...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $762,423 to the Regents of the University of Michigan on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and optimize quantitative magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) technology for non-invasive assessment of bladder wall tissue characteristics in neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. The research addresses limitations of current...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Trustees of Princeton University $151,760 on January 9, 2027, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop kidney-targeted drug delivery using solute carrier transporters. The research establishes proof-of-concept for exploiting cystine transporters SLC7A9 and SLC7A13, which are highly expressed in kidney tissue, to deliver drugs selectively to kidney cells....
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Silq Technologies Corporation $320,965 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). Silq will develop a zwitterion-treated ureteral stent designed to reduce device-related complications in patients with ureteral obstructions. The work encompasses three aims: developing the zwitterion-treated stent, demonstrating lower biofilm formation and encrustation compared to commercially available ureteral stents, and demonstrating reduced friction relative to commercially available low-friction stents. Current ureteral stents—composed of polyurethane or silicone—carry significant clinical burdens: polyurethane stents promote infections through encrustation and biofilm formation, while silicone stents, though more biocompatible, present high friction during insertion and removal. This award funds Phase I research to prove that Silq's ClearTract technology can address both deficiencies in a single device. Performance will occur in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, with a period of performance from August 21, 2026, through July 31, 2027. This is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for NIH extramural research awards.
