The project addresses the long-standing practice of "dry weight" assessment—a trial-and-error...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Pennsylvania $792,019 on May 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to phenotype and predict ultrafiltration intolerance and guide transitions from continuous to intermittent kidney replacement therapy. The award funds research addressing hemodynamic complications that arise when critical-care patients transition from continuous kidney...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Emory University $1.594 million on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a prospective longitudinal cohort study characterizing quality-of-life experiences among 221 home dialysis patients and their family caregivers. The study will examine how patients and caregivers incorporate peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis into daily...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Silicon Kidney LLC $354,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop an Intracorporeal Hemodialysis System (IHEMO) enabling home hemodialysis for end-stage kidney disease patients. Silicon Kidney LLC will develop and advance toward commercialization an implanted hemodialyzer (hemocartridge) that creates permanent vascular connections...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Panluminate Inc. $354,958 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate the PAN-EXM Renal Pathology Platform, an AI-enabled diagnostic system for podocytopathies including focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy, and minimal change disease. Panluminate will deliver three core products over the 30-month period...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Minnesota Healthsolutions Corporation $628,558 on September 12, 2025, to develop and evaluate an innovative dialysis cannulation needle designed to reduce accidental needle infiltration injury during hemodialysis. The award funds work under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), which supports extramural biomedical research that improves understanding of disease...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Veterans Medical Research Foundation of San Diego $383,098 on September 2, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The recipient will conduct research into kidney tubule dysfunction in APOL1-associated chronic kidney disease, with focus on developing and validating tubular biomarkers that capture kidney functions—nutrient reabsorption and toxin...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Updoc AI $1.467 million on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and evaluate the UPDOC Clinical Copilot, an AI agent that directly manages medication prescriptions to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The project, titled Titration Response and Enhancement by AI Tools for T2DM (TREAT-T2DM), focuses on optimizing...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Washington University $766,951 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate imaging biomarkers for assessing high-risk deceased donor kidneys slated for transplantation. The project addresses kidney shortage by improving the accuracy of kidney quality assessment, reducing the approximately 2,500 procured kidneys discarded...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Daecos LLC $619,274 on August 6, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate an artificial intelligence-driven clinical decision support system for predicting acute dialysis needs in critically ill patients. Daecos will refine its proprietary algorithms using retrospective data from three UC San Diego hospitals, deploy the system within UC San Diego's Epic electronic health record via AWS cloud and FHIR APIs to enable real-time decision support, and implement silent-mode testing to evaluate validity, usability, and workflow integration across teaching and non-teaching settings. The work focuses on developing a secure, scalable data processing pipeline, integrating heterogeneous data sources, and designing an intelligent alert system aligned with ICU workflows. The system aims to identify patients who will benefit from acute dialysis early and accurately, stratify patients into distinct phenotypes for dynamic risk assessment, and reduce mortality, ICU length of stay, and progression to chronic dialysis dependence. The algorithms have been validated on more than 100,000 ICU patients across five international centers. Daecos collaborates with the UC San Diego Center for Health Innovation. Performance occurs in La Jolla, California, with a period of performance ending July 31, 2027.
