The research will integrate cell-free DNA epigenomic features—including methylation patterns and...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research $484,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research characterizing and inhibiting interactions of the alpha-secretase ADAM17 with the neuronal-myelin signaling complex upon spinal cord injury. The study investigates how myelin-associated inhibitors—including...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $174,296 on December 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to study the dynamics of chromosomal instability in glioblastoma within the neural microenvironment. The recipient will investigate chromosomal instability (CIN) and extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) formation in glioblastoma tumors using human-induced pluripotent stem...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Emory University $156,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to generate and characterize a novel conditional SPTLC1 mouse model investigating sphingolipid dysregulation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The project will develop the first...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $234,750 on January 26, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate neuromodulation of somato-sympathetic postganglionic activity after spinal cord injury. The research develops animal models incorporating clinically analogous epidural spinal cord stimulation to understand how neuromodulation can restore autonomic function...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $495,164 on June 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support research investigating mechanisms of Schwann cell development and plasticity in peripheral nerve regeneration. The research focuses on the MITF transcription factor as an injury-induced regulator of Schwann cell plasticity. The project will use...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $619,189 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology on August 19, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to establish a bioelectronics-integrated mesoscale organ-on-a-chip platform for neuromuscular disease modeling. MIT will develop a limb-on-a-chip platform that...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The University of Chicago $100,228 on December 31, 2026, to support research on perisynaptic Schwann cells in C9ORF72 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The research investigates why certain muscles are disproportionately vulnerable to degeneration in ALS while others remain spared—specifically why extraocular eye muscles are...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $195,625 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop a human schwannoma-on-chip platform for real-time monitoring of tumor-nerve interactions. Schwannomatosis is a rare neurological disease characterized by peripheral nerve tumors that cause debilitating pain and progressive neurological deficits, with current treatment limited to surgical resection and pain management. The project addresses the lack of effective preclinical models that capture the critical tumor-nerve interface and allow assessment of therapeutic selectivity—the ability to kill the tumor while protecting the adjacent nerve. The platform will integrate patient-derived tumor spheroids with functional peripheral nerve components under physiologically relevant flow and geometric conditions. Preliminary work successfully generated and validated 3D schwannoma spheroids replicating patient tumor characteristics under defined genetic conditions but lacked crucial tumor-nerve interaction. The funded work will design, fabricate, and optimize the schwannoma-on-chip platform to recapitulate the human tumor-nerve interface and enable identification of high-efficacy therapeutics while pinpointing optimal therapeutic windows. Work is performed in Atlanta, Georgia. The award period runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028.
