This federal Project Grant award, provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program, supports research to investigate the role of LRRC8 anion channels in brain taurine signaling and body fluid homeostasis. The $245,938 award, effective from December 1, 2024 to November 30, 2026, will be conducted by Albany Medical College. The research aims to conclusively demonstrate the contribution of LRRC8A-containing volume-regulated anion channels (VRACs) to the regulation of extracellular taurine and GABA levels in the mammalian brain, as well as ascertain the functional role of astrocytic VRAC-mediated taurine release in hypothalamic control of body fluid-electrolyte homeostasis. This exploratory study seeks to address a significant gap in knowledge regarding the role of brain LRRC8/VRAC channels in the negative control of neuronal excitability, which is important for developing neuroprotective agents targeting VRAC activity in stroke and other brain pathologies.
