The Medical College of Wisconsin, Inc. received a $413,808 Project Grant from the National Cancer Institute under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) effective August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2028. The award supports research to develop and validate a wireless cranial stimulation protocol using the FDA-approved Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS) System to induce neuroplasticity in glioma patients. The primary objective is to enable safer and more extensive surgical tumor resection in cases where tumors infiltrate critical brain regions such as primary motor or speech cortex, thereby optimizing both survival outcomes and quality of life for patients with primary brain tumors across virtually all grades and genetic subtypes. The research deliverables include the development of stimulation parameters that can disrupt motor function through primary motor cortex stimulation to encourage brain function remapping away from tumor-infiltrated areas. Through this prehabilitation approach combining cortical stimulation and rehabilitation, the project seeks to demonstrate that the RNS system can facilitate functional remapping prior to surgery, allowing neurosurgeons to perform more complete tumor resections while preserving critical neurological functions. The study will be conducted at the awardee's facility in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.Federal Grant Award Summary
