Project Grant R21AI203589
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $647,356 on June 17, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the role of GPR132 in regulating CD8 T cell responses during infection and cancer. The research aims to determine how GPR132, a G protein–coupled receptor that detects oxidized endogenous and microbial lipids, regulates CD8 T cell expansion and memory differentiation. The...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $235,500 on June 17, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to establish proof-of-concept for nucleotide-competing inhibitors (NCIs) targeting HIV-1 and LINE-1 reverse transcriptases. The research develops NCIs that block polymerase active sites without requiring incorporation into nucleic acids, addressing limitations of existing nucleoside...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $780,615 on July 23, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct research on immune signaling and antibacterial defenses controlled by mycobacterial PE/PPE proteins. The research addresses mechanisms by which Mycobacterium tuberculosis manipulates host cell biology to establish infection. MTB secretes over 100 proteins that block macrophage...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $813,248 on August 20, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the role of neutrophils in tuberculosis pathogenesis and post-TB lung disease. The research, conducted at the Newark, New Jersey location and extending through July 31, 2031, defines how early neutrophil recruitment, activation, and metabolic reprogramming regulate TB...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Health Sciences School of Nursing) $421,098 on April 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855, Project Grant R21AI196915). The recipient will conduct research to identify and investigate CD4+ T cell clonotypes comprising a polyclonal repertoire against aeroallergen in a...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey (doing business as RBHS-School of Nursing) $764,590 on February 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the ontogeny and functions of trained macrophages in type 2 immunity. The research addresses helminth parasite infections affecting an estimated 2 billion people globally and examines how type 2 inflammatory responses balance...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $379,077 on May 19, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to establish the Research Pathway at Rutgers University, Newark (RP-RUN), a research training program for undergraduate students in biomedical science. RP-RUN provides full-year research exposure to a minimum of 125 undergraduate students at Rutgers-Newark, a federally designated...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $235,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to characterize mechanisms of foam cell formation in tuberculosis and cryptococcosis infections. The recipient, operating as RBHS-School of Nursing, will conduct comparative analysis of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and macrophage pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, doing business as RBHS-School of Nursing, $2.060 million on September 11, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate host-bacterial interactions determining the spectrum of Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission. The research examines the biology of MTB infection across exposed household contacts and "resister"...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, School of Nursing, received a $416,121 Project Grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) on June 11, 2025, with a completion date of May 31, 2027. This award supports investigator-initiated biomedical research examining the role of TBet+ B cells in viral reinfection and host protection. The research will advance...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Rutgers The State University of New Jersey $431,750 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to define the impact of phosphatidylserine-targeting antibodies on T cell function in HIV-1 infection. The research investigates how phosphatidylserine-reactive antibodies, produced endogenously during HIV-1 infection, influence T cell dysregulation and immune activation in people living with HIV-1. Despite effective antiretroviral therapy, this population exhibits persistent immune activation and chronic inflammation that contribute to non-AIDS comorbidities and premature immune senescence. Preliminary studies show that phosphatidylserine antibody titers negatively correlate with CD4 T cell counts and positively correlate with CD8 T cell expansion, and that phosphatidylserine-binding monoclonal antibodies reduce inhibitory checkpoint expression and enhance antigen-stimulated T cell responses. The project will characterize the biological mechanisms and therapeutic potential of these naturally induced antibodies as a host-directed therapeutic strategy. The award is a Project Grant assistance type with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. Work is performed in Newark, New Jersey. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, operates through its Robert Wood Johnson Health Sciences division, with the School of Nursing as the primary recipient entity. The school conducts biomedical and health services research across infectious disease, immunology, and related areas, with substantial prior NIH funding concentration across the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and National Institute on Aging.
