About this award

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director, through the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310), awarded $200,000 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to support the 29th United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA) 2025. The award, obligated on August 20, 2025, with a completion date of July 31, 2026, funds a national conference hosted by the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) in collaboration with UNC's Center for AIDS Research. The conference addresses "Aging with HIV: Challenges and Opportunities for People Over 50," focusing on the significant demographic shift in the HIV-positive population, where over 53% of approximately 1.1 million people with HIV in the United States are age 50 and older.

The grant supports four primary conference objectives: advancing scientific knowledge on the intersection of aging and HIV; enhancing clinical practice and care for older adults living with HIV; promoting policy and advocacy efforts addressing the needs of older adults with HIV; and fostering community engagement and support networks. NMAC, leveraging 30 years of experience organizing the annual USCHA, anticipates attendance of approximately 3,000 healthcare providers, state and local health department leaders, researchers, and people with HIV. As a sub-awardee, NMAC will distribute 105 scholarships to community leaders and consumers to facilitate participation, policy discussions, and peer exchange among the nation's HIV workforce.

Description

28TH annual united states conference on HIV/aids (uscha) - the 29TH united states conference on HIV/aids (uscha) 2025, hosted by nmac in collaboration with the university of north carolina (UNC) center for aids research (cfar), will focus on "aging with HIV: challenges and opportunities for people over 50". Advances in HIV treatment have greatly increased the life expectancy of persons with HIV. Recent data suggests that of approximately 1.1 million people with HIV in the united states over 53% were aged 50 and older. This age demographic shift presents unique challenges and opportunities requiring focused attention and tailored strategies for intervention. The specific aims of the conference are: 1) to advance scientific knowledge on the intersection of aging and HIV. 2) to enhance clinical practice and care for older adults living with HIV. 3) to promote policy and advocacy efforts that address the needs of older adults with HIV. 4) to foster community engagement and support networks for older adults living with HIV. Nmac has a 30 year history of successfully drawing healthcare providers, state and local health department leaders, researchers, and people with HIV to participate in the annual uscha. The average attendance at uscha between 2022-24 was 3,000 persons. Given the critical and timely need to address the needs of people with HIV over 50, we anticipate similar or slightly higher attendance for the 2025 uscha.
