The award funds research to exploit RNA biogenesis, specifically alternative splicing programs, to accelerate maturation of human neurons in vitro and to develop models of age-related tauopathies. The research addresses a fundamental...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Northern California Institute For Research And Education, Inc. (NCIRE) $414,464 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support research on sleep-dependent modulation of transplanted neural circuits for stroke recovery. The project characterizes the integration of human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons transplanted...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $420,750 to West Virginia University Research Corporation on August 27, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Project Grant R21NS151357). The award funds research into sleep-driven reorganization of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic nanoarchitecture, investigating how...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded The Medical University of South Carolina $100,228 on December 16, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research on complement-mediated mechanisms of injury and repair in germinal matrix hemorrhage, a leading neurological injury of prematurity....
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $462,148 to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York on July 8, 2026, under the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative (CFDA 93.372). Columbia will develop and benchmark functional graphene nanoribbon (F-GNR) neural probes as ion-selective, multimodal recording tools for neuroscience. The project addresses the lack of existing tools with sufficient molecular...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Wake Forest University $533,623 on September 3, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research investigating mechanisms that protect neurons from glutamate excitotoxicity during metabolic stress. The research uses avian neurons, which naturally resist...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $150,932 on March 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop computational and theoretical models characterizing interactions between motor cortex and dorsolateral striatum in naturalistic motor behavior. The project uses simultaneous multi-region neural recordings from mice combined...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Cincinnati $654,628 on March 6, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to characterize the peripheral and immune-cell proteome in intracerebral hemorrhage patients and identify biomarkers and mechanisms associated with vascular cognitive...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $661,867 to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York on August 5, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research to develop electroencephalography-based sleep biomarkers for predicting recovery trajectories in patients with acute brain injury and disorders of consciousness. The project, titled SPRINT (Sleep to Predict Recovery in Unconscious Patients with Acute Brain Injury), will establish whether well-formed sleep spindles detected within one week post-injury can prognosticate recovery of consciousness by day 28 post-injury and whether sleep spindles are non-inferior to cognitive motor dissociation for predicting long-term neurological recovery at one year. The research will also develop machine-learning-supported EEG measures to improve prognostication accuracy, particularly for aphasic patients and those with language barriers. Work is performed at Columbia University's Health Sciences Division in New York, New York. The period of performance extends from the award date through June 30, 2031. This is a Project Grant, a form of assistance under NINDS's mission to reduce the burden of neurological disease through fundamental research and clinical investigation.
