- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded the University of Pittsburgh $587,678 on June 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to elucidate immune cell trafficking and biodegradation of bioscaffolds implanted in brain tissue using multi-color 19F magnetic resonance imaging. The research visualizes the spatio-temporal dynamics of peripheral immune cell accumulation and invasion into...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Wisconsin–Madison $494,240 on February 16, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate target-directed microRNA degradation in post-stroke brain tissue. The project examines how microRNA-7 is depleted following stroke despite intact biogenesis, hypothesizing that target-directed microRNA degradation (TDMD) drives this loss....
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $574,660 to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate neutrophil extracellular trap mitigation in ischemic stroke outcomes. The research addresses vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia following acute ischemic stroke by examining how neutrophils form extracellular...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Texas at Austin $393,284 on June 13, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct basic research on synaptic structural plasticity and stroke rehabilitation. The project examines how the brain remodels neural circuitry following stroke, with focus on reactive synaptogenesis—the growth of new connections among surviving neurons near...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Florida International University $471,698 on May 13, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the role of perivascular fibroblasts in secondary spinal cord injury. The research focuses on peptidase inhibitor 16 (PI16) as a novel therapeutic target for neuroprotection after spinal cord injury. Preliminary studies indicate that activation of...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $433,125 to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the role of REST (Restrictive Element-1 Silencing Transcription Factor) in governing post-stroke neural plasticity and recovery. The...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Wake Forest University $533,623 on September 3, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research investigating mechanisms that protect neurons from glutamate excitotoxicity during metabolic stress. The research uses avian neurons, which naturally resist...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Florida State University $448,943 on September 3, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) to engineer and bio-manufacture extracellular vesicles secreted by M2 microglia-like cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells for stroke therapy. The research aims to promote neural regeneration in ischemic stroke by developing extracellular vesicles that contain protein, lipid, and microRNA cargo with therapeutic function. The four specific research aims include testing metabolic monitoring to enhance bio-manufacturing of these vesicles in a vertical-wheel bioreactor; characterizing the therapeutic cargo and immunomodulation properties of the vesicles; and evaluating their capacity to promote neural regeneration and synaptic activities both in vitro using brain organoid models and in vivo. The work hypothesizes that vesicles secreted by M2 microglia-like cells upregulate neural protective function and suppress pro-inflammatory signaling while enhancing neurogenesis and synaptogenesis. Performance of work occurs in Tallahassee, Florida, with project completion scheduled for July 31, 2031. This is a project grant under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders, which supports fundamental research on brain and nervous system structure and function through merit-based peer review.
