This federal Project Grant award, provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program, funds research to investigate a novel pharmacological approach to mitigate neurovascular complications associated with stroke in diabetic patients. With a total award value of $459,111, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will conduct comprehensive in vivo and in vitro studies to explore the underlying mechanisms by which a small-molecule SERCA2 activator, CDN1163, can restore calcium homeostasis and attenuate endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress in diabetic stroke. This 5-year project aims to elucidate how targeting dysfunctional SERCA2 can alleviate the heightened risk of brain injury, blood-brain barrier leakage, edema, and poor recovery outcomes experienced by stroke patients with type 2 diabetes.
